I am re-entering the dive world and am in the market to purchase a new BCD. The problem that I have is that I am a very large man.

A bit of background: 6'1" tall, around 375 lbs. and have a 56" waist.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone that can offer good positive advice on the type of rig I should look into, including vendors that offer good deals for that equipment. I have not had much luck finding vest style BCD's that look like they would fit. I have considered the harness type system but am a bit discouraged by the extreme price that they seem to come with. But I am serious about diving and would like to invest in some decent equipment. Thank you in advance for your advice.:D

I am trying to stay between $300 and $500 for the complete rig. (BCD)

Hmmm. A backplate and wing system is very adjustable. It doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. What is your budget for the BCD?

I am attempting to stay between $300 and $500 if at all possible for the entire rig. (BDC)

Not a problem! Call Tobin at Deep Sea Supply and I'm sure he can hook you up with a rig for less than $500. Sure, it's going to be a BP/W but that's probably the style that will fit best.

I can think of two options that would fit in your price range:
  1. Deep Sea Supply
  2. Golem Gear -- current holiday special $360 for stainless steel BP/W rig

I have experience with both Halcyon and Deep Sea Supply BP/Ws. Both are very good quality. I have heard that Golem Gear makes good stuff, too.

You can also piece together a HOG brand BP/W rig with your budget.

Backplate and wing is infinitely adjustable, which is perfect for someone who's not an off the shelf size. In addition, they are less expensive (and have better resale value, if that's of any importance) than many/most of the new traditional BC's.

You've been given great advice above....contact Tobin at Deep Sea Supply. He has great gear and offers phenomenal customer service.

You may want to look into a black inflate BCD. something form Zeagle ranger. Allot of adjustment.

Thank you to all who gave advice. I appreciate it.
