I need to purchase a video camera for work and I would like to think ahead and be able to use it underwater to start videoing taping dives also. Can anyone help point me in the right direction? I don't have really deep pockets so the housing would need to be reasonably priced if that's at all possible. Thanks again!

You're going to need to give people some idea of:

1. What kind of camera you're going to buy for "work".
2. What your idea of "reasonably priced" means.

If you intend to purchase a housing that is electronically controlled, then I'd suggest you take a good look at Sony products. Their LANC control really has nearly a lock on the underwater camera market.

Also are you looking at an SD, HDV, or HD camera for work? This will make a drastic difference in what people would be recommending.

PerroneFord,

I have narrowed my search to a Canon hG10. To your knowledge is there many housings available at competitive prices?

Maybe check with Ikelite? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable with this family of cameras will chime in with some good options.

May I ask what led you to this particular camera?

The only housing I know of for that camera is by Ikelite. The camera is not supported by the other major housing manufacturers including the universal housings by Light & Motion and Top Dawg.

My suggestion would be to go with a camera that is better supported by the housing manufacturers, which will generally be a Sony camera. Cameras that are heavily supported would be the Sony HC7, HC9, SR8, SR12, CX7 and previous models.

Since Canon cameras lack a Lanc port, your options are limited to mechanical housings. Besides the Ikeliite, I believe Equinox can house it in their Pro6 housing. Maybe Aquavideo as well. Those are about your only inexpensive options - really your only options outside of the cheaper seal n' go models like Aquatix and Shellicam. But they lack control functionality.

If you get the Ikelite housing with the optional mirror, it's going to pan backwards. Ikelite only sells reversing circuitry for use with Sony cameras.

What are you paying for the HG-10? B&H currently has it for $649. I just bought one Sunday, they shipped it yesterday. CAHG10* | B&H Photo Video

PerroneFord,

I read the reviews and liked what I read. If I may ask what would have been your choice?

sjspeck,

I'm actually looking to purchase it from the very same place! Hey what the heck is a Lanc port?? I'm assuming you did your research also on this camera before making the purchase you too must have liked what you had read?

Are you considering using it for diving also? And if so what housing are you leaning towards?

It's a connector tied to circuitry on Sony camcorders that allows you to control functions of the camera electronically. So with an electronic housing, you simply plug-in the housing and the housing controls the functions of the camera.

With a mechanical housing like the Ikelite or Equinox, individual control rods and buttons are located at various points on the housing that control each function separately.

Both work, it's just personal preference.

I went for recording time and price. But it's for my sister to use topside. Although it did have the best sensor and most features compared to the Sony HDR-SR5 or the JVC HD3. I needed it now so wasn't willing to wait for the new Sony models to start shipping. The HG10 was $699 at B&H about 3 weeks ago.

No, I'm firmly in the electronic housings camp. I shoot a Sony HDR-HC1 in an Amphibico EVO housing. I've had it a couple of years. A current version of what I have would be Sony's HDR-HC7/9 in an EVO Elite housing (about $3500 retail)
