Please recommend an entry-level speargun for a beginner. I'll be in the Dry Tortugas/Maraquesas Keys in late February and plan to try spearfishing. Thanks.

AB Biller 48" mahogany, probably one of the best guns you can get for under $200 (dive shops sell them for $250-$270, but leisure pro has them for $190). That gun will give you the range/power you need to shoot just about anything a beginner is looking to take in that area (i wouldnt use it for blue marlin offshore...)

rqscott,

Many factors should be considered when looking at a gun choice.

Some are: Scuba or freediving, size and strength of the diver, prey choices, most common hunting location & visibility, site type: wrecks, reefs, rigs, walls.

I'd be using my 55" freeshaft gun on that trip, but I don't know enough about you to make a recommendation.

You'll shoot you're eye out, kid.:D;)

Assuming you will be hunting on scuba, a 48'' gun is a great all around gun for a beginner in Florida waters. I will not comment further since I am not sure what you are looking to spend.

Beginner at what? Diving or spearfishing? If you are a beginner diver don't spearfish. If you are a beginner spearfisher a 48" Biller is a good choice. If you have the money I would reccomend a longer gun since it will stay with you longer and you can later freeshaft with.
I live in the Keys. Use a 48" Mid Riffe with 57" shafts - freeshafting. No problem with anything i've encountered. Plenty of power (3 bands), extremely accurate. Pricey.

I second the RIFFE, it is well built, quiet and accurate.

It's hard to go wrong with a standard #2 Riffe, but I have been doing some research on Darryl Wong's guns. I actually got to use one of his hybrids, about the same size of the standard #2, and it to is an excellent gun, accurate and quiet.
I use these guns on wrecks both on scuba and freediving. I also use them with coated stainless steel cable, and sometimes in blue water with a float line and torpedo float.
Good luck on your search, and good hunting.

i dont know that one can consider a Riffe or a Wong a "beginner" gun. ya you can buy a great gun and keep it for years, but those guns cost alot of money and i personally dont think they are reasonable recommendations to someone who wants to "try spearfishing" on a vacation.

The post originator hasn't been back, so there's not much point in speculating about him or her.

Just for general information:

Wong/Aimrite rail guns, in all sizes, can be as low as $279 to $299.

Riffes begin around the middle $300s.

Both brands can go up around $1000 or more for top models.

Biller makes fine guns too, and they also range up to around $500.

All too often novices buy a junky powerless gun and don't have a positive experience their first time.

Many beginning spearfishers are not looking for economy guns. I've met many who want to buy the best gun that suits them.
