Aw, geez. I bought an A630 and a housing earlier this year, took it to the Cay Sal Banks on the Nekton Pilot, took a couple thousand AMAZING shots with it. LOVE my A630. Alas, the housing has a very slow leak in it. Not enough to ruin the camera, but enough that I can't risk using it any more.

So, I sent it back to Canon under warranty. They can't fix it. They have NO more A630 housings.

So, they are offering to me a reconditioned SD1100IS with housing for an upgrade fee of $70 if I send the A630 back to them.

Is this a good deal or not???

I don't need the A630 for anything else. I have a wonderful Nikon DSLR for land photography and I already own a point-and-shoot camera. I only bought the A630 for u/w photography.

I need to let them know my decision soon. Thanks in advance.

The SD's lack something the A-series had. If I can remember what it is I'll post it here.

Although I guess you don't really have a choice if they can't fix your housing short of finding one on eBay or somewhere.

I believe the A-series use AA batteries.

Yes, in fact the A630 uses four of them so it's super quick and the batteries last for hundreds of shots throughout the day.

Also the A series has manual exposure control.

Buying another Canon housing is throwing good after bad, they are at least $200 or so online and I could have the same problem. The Ikelite housing for this camera is about $500, which I don't have.

I called Canon back and told them I am brokenhearted, and could they come up with a better offer? They are working on it.

I called Reef Photo Video and asked if they repair them and they said no, Canon housings are considered to be "disposable".

Finances ARE a factor here and I'm afraid I may be stuck with their offer. :(

That was the difference I was referring to.

Reef Photo said that if I plan to get external strobes, and I do, that I will need the Manual settings.

You may have already done this, but let Canon know what your requirements are--Manual Settings, etc.--and ask them to at least meet your requirements.

Thanks Ron, I spoke with her at length...she doesn't think she can help me but she's going to research further.

Right now I'm trying to locate an Ikelite housing for the A630 and if I can find one in stock new someplace I'm going to see if I can get a refund from Canon for the housing. I only paid about $75 for it new (on a clearance) but still, that would help.
