Jackie and I want to dive Lake Lanier tomorrow (15th of July), we want to get at least 2 dives (we only have a tank apiece, so we'd have to drive to a nearby LDS to get fills).

What we need to know is where is the best spot to go on the lake? where we park? the best heading to dive in the lake? etc... If you want to keep the dive info confidental, and don't want to post in public, by all means, please PM me.

The closest shop, I assume, is Elements Swim and Scuba on 4875 Hog Mountain Road, Flowery Branch, GA 30542? If there's a closer LDS for air fills, please let me know its address so I can google it.

Thanks!

There is a place called "Red Neck Reef" of the beach at the Sunrise Marina public recreation area.

Get a local map of Gainesville/Lake Lanier and find Sunrise Marina.

Surface swim out to the third fixed buoy. Take a 240 degree heading out to you get down to about 20' and you'll find a whole bunch of "yard objects de arte" that people have put out there over the years.

It's fun. Should give you a lot of bottom time given the depth, and the bottom is a hard clay so the visibility can be quite good.

The only two placed I have dove is at West Bank Park and East Overlook. Either one is a good dive.
WBP...when you enter turn to the left and park. The little cove there is called "mask" cove. This is where I've dove the most. Nothing really to see at depth. I would stick to the edges in about 15', lots of fish actvity there.

East Overlook...Long hike to water, difficult entry. It gets deep quick here. I've only dove here once and it was a 100' dive.

Oh, get whereever very early. The parks fill up by about 11:00am. Flag is LAW and they will fine you.

(never mind)

Jackie and I went to Sunrise Cove Marina today in Gainesville, we were hoping to hit the Redneck Reef. Once we arrived at the marina, it was a private marina (not public?) but the security guard let us thru, and the marina was chock-full of boats, no where for us to dive off, didnt see any obvious buoys? we were confused... I wish we had better info.

anyways, we decided to drive south and dove West Bend Park, and parked exactly where JKSteger mentioned. It was just an OK dive, tons and tons of trash :( bottles & cans everywhere, much worse than the puget sound. This would be the perfect candidate for a day of cleanup during earth day or something like that. We found a dive platform appx 13' deep and a chair attached to it, it was neat. We were in the water for 1 hour 3 minutes. We were glad to just get a dive in.

The K - where the hell is redneck reef? :) (is it #105 on this map: http://www.lakelanier.com/images/LakeRecMap.gif ?)
