2nd stage is an Akros (might also be called an Orbiter)
1st stage is an MR12....I think this one had a "spherical cone seat", and not the typical seat....you should have a look under the filter before going further.

I replied in the other thread Randy, but once more can't hurt

That vintage MR-12 is similar (same?) to an old one I have. I believe you will find the volcano orifice is a machined part of th first stage (not removable like the newer MR-12's); but other than that, it will use the current MR-12 rebuild kit just fine, including the lastest Tri-material HP poppet.

It is a great reg. The newer MR-12's have a slight advantage with a bit better hose routing (they have one additional LP port I think) and the replaceable orifice/seat.

Best wishes.

Got a good feeling that Mares introduced a small run of MR12's about 10 years ago that used a similar removable orifice as the MR16, I think this XL is one of them.

You could be right. My sum total experience is limited to the MR-12's I own: 3 that are late models (2007) one that is old, and looks identical to Randy's as far as I can tell.... but his could easily be older or newer than my "old" one.

I think Greg Barlow replied in the Mares forum Randy; he is the Mares "guru", I'm just a DIY'er who owns several Mares regs and collects manuals

Best wishes.
