My wife, who also dives wants to plan a trip in the first or second week in October, but only for 3 days, and preferably in the Caribbean. I would like it to be somewhere we can dive. We were considering Aruba, b/c there does not seem to be any direct flight to Bonaire or Curacao from any of the New York area airports, and it is a lot of traveling for only three days. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I will go to Bonaire, i know you have to change planes, but October is Hurricane season, and Bonaire is out of the hurricane belt, try the west coast, you can do some California diving, or Mar de Cortez in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico is getting popular as well.

I think I just heard an announcement that Continental is starting a direct flight to Bonaire from New York. Don't know when, but it might be worth checking out.

Barbados gives away flights and lodging in October. We went there last year and it was great, the diving was pretty good too. I'd go back... Don't stay at the Allamanda or what ever it is... no beach

these guys are always having sales.. one ends tomorrow but don't sweet it, there'll be another..

Why not Florida? 3 days is hardly worth going anywhere. I used to go for a week, now I go for two weeks, much better. Good luck though.

All the ABC islands are out of the hurricane area! They are practically laying next of eachother. So Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao are all safe to go to in octobre.

I live in Curacao and there are no direct flights here.

Bonaire/Curacao don't work so well for a short trip, you will pretty much kill a whole day on each end traveling. The redeye from Newark that starts in December might be a good way to get to Bonaire, leave the night before and be there the next morning, but that is only one flight a week and you'll pretty much lose a day coming back no matter how you do it. Aruba you might be able to do better with, you may even be able to find a direct charter flight with efficient arrival and departure times, but often they're only Saturday.

You could look into Grand Cayman or Turks&Caicos (Provo.) They're closer which is a help on a short trip and you might be able to get a direct flight from a NY area airport or at least one with better connection than you typically get to ABC. Or maybe someplace in the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Bermuda might have direct flights?

I've decided on Aruba. Any suggestions on which dive co. or which sites to dive?

Not so fast. The shore diving on Bonaire and Curacao are big advantages for short trips because you can dive as much and as long as you want. I just went to Curacao from NY. Left Saturday came back Wednesday. I did 2 shore dives on the house reef at Habitat Saturday afternoon/night. 4 dives on Sunday, 4 on Monday and 1 Tuesday morning which lasted 86 minutes.

Curacao has the advantage over Bonaire on flights. Plenty of daily flights from NY through Miami and Curacao diving wipes the floor with Aruba.

Sorry for being so opinionated, but I am a New Yorker born and raised and I just got back from a GREAT long weekend of diving in Curacao. :D
