I currently have a canon G10 in the canon housing using a sea life strobe. The strobe has given me quite a bit of trouble: the company "fixed" it once and then replaced it. I did an Aggressor trip in the Caymans and the "Certificate of Accomplishment" I received at the end of the trip was for "Strobe Mechanic."
Keep in mind I am trying to be conservative price-wise because I only get to dive about once a year (twice if I'm, lucky). The other important basic info is I spend most of my picture taking on macro or close-up pics.
CAMERA: So my first goal was to get a new strobe. However, since I thought it would be a good idea to have a back-up camera for my next live-aboard so I have a "spare" camera, my buddy suggested I get a used G10. However in looking at the used prices it looks like I would have to spend $200-$250. So I thought, maybe it would be better to get a G15 for $200 more.
HOUSING: And since the canon housings don't allow access to the dial (even though I know there is a way to do it per other posters on this site by manipulating some of the buttons) I thought getting the new G15 Fantasea housing would be best for accessing all the controls. Then everyone says that Ikelite is the best housing (in the lower price range) so I started looking at that option. Does the Ikelite housing give access to ALL the canon buttons and DIAL? Is it too bulky?
STROBES: In looking at all the compatibility info for strobes for the Fantasea housing I got really confused. I tried to call Fantasea to ask them questions about strobes, but they don't have a 800 # and are in Canada. For the Ikelite, the least expensive TTL strobe is the DS 51 - the DS 160 is almost a $1000 - I can't justify that. But the DS 51 doesn't work with the canon in manual mode. Does that mean if I use manual camera mode I CAN use the DS 51 manually as well? Is there a better strobe that will sync with the housing directly like the DS 51?
STROBE ARM: I know the SA arm systems would allow a lot of flexibility, but I don't like the idea of messing with the different joints so I am tending towards the flex arm - am I missing something?
So....canon G15, Ikelite 6146.15 housing, DS51 strobe, and Ikelite Flex arm ??????
Last question: if I decide this is the best set up I saw the "Canon G15 Underwater Housing 6146.15 & DS51 Strobe Package by Ikelite" listed for $1175 on ebay sold by shootunderwater - I have a 10% off coupon for ebay (which I think will apply) - is that a good company to buy from? or is it better to go with B&H? Anybody else who's cheaper AND reliable?
Thanks - I know this is a lot!
