Before you say, "Hey! Don't go AI!", let me state that my wife is a non-diver and has a serious medical condition. She is simply not up to walking or even taking taxis to restaurants a couple times a day. I would like to find a reasonable hotel with either a good AI package or decent restaurants on the site (or, at most, across the street.) My wife would be in the hotel virtually the whole time. (Her condition is not such that she would need medical services, so having decent medical facilities nearby is not important.)

I know that this is a bit unusual, but that's one reason I'm on Scubaboard...I know that somebody, somewhere, knows what I'm looking for! ;-)

Thanks so much!

I understand and agree that an AI is best for you and your wife. If you're considering this trip after Dec of 2004 I would say try the new Plaza Las Glorias which will be an AI resort owned by the Palace chain then.

If not the Occidental Grand was very nice when I stayed there with a day pass in May of this year.

We chose to go with an AI because of the convenience and the pool vollyeball, thats for my husband who lives for sports. We did tons of research on travelocity and scubaboard and looked at lots of opinions. We even asked the same question here. And we came up with the Occidental Grand. So we are going there over Thanksgiving. Lots of the dive ops will pick you up on their pier. You can even use their dive op, Dive Palancar, but we have heard that it is very much a resort dive op. So we reserved with Blue XT Sea. Hope this helps!

The new Cozumel Palace (currently Plaza Las Glorias) will be very nice and is a great location for both of you.

Otherwise, the Occidental Grand or even the Cozemelino (north hotel zone) is very nice The only drawback to the Cozemelino, is that unless you dive with the onsite operator, you will need to take a taxi to wherever your op picks up.

Good luck and have a great vacation!

Occidental Grand is a couple hundred meters from restraurants to the beach, and your room is somewhere in between. Also, it's 3 stories with no elevators. Although the Grand is tops, in your case PLG may be a better choice.

The Grand may suit your needs. Make sure you get a first floor room in the front of the property close to the restaurants. Building 10 is the closest. I know they have room service so your wife can even take some of her meals in your room. And there is also a doctor at the Grand just in case.

But the bottom line is the staff can take her anywhere around the property on the long golf cart type vehicles they use for themselves as well as to carry customers and luggage to their rooms. I am sure if you ask at the front desk they will send a cart to take your wife around whenever she needs to use it. I would find out who is in charge of the carts and slip him a few bucks so when you call he sends a cart right over. Hey money talks. For the right size note they may even reserve a cart for your exclusive use.

By the way the Grand is a really nice resort.

My wife and I stayed at the Iberostar two years ago and really enjoyed our experience. Keep in mind that it is not true five star service (nothing on the island is) and that it is on the opposite end of the island from the main town. The location has ups and downs - it is quiet and taking a ride further south is quite beautiful, but a cab ride downtown can be about $40 (so try to split the cab with others or rent a vehicle). The food was very good, and they have a wonderful pool and nice beach (which includes kayaks, catamarans and wind surfers). They have several restaurants, including a large buffet, a steak place and a mexican place. Also, there is a great dock on the pier and you can either use their dive op, or use another one (as we did) that can pick up on the dock on their way to the dive sites. Becuase many of the sites are on this end of the island, you spend less time on the boat, usually being the last ones on and first ones off. The staff was very friendly and, of course, they have the cheesy shows at night. There is also a night club and outdoor (but covered) billiards.

You may want to look at reviews of the different AI facilities on the island at tripadvisor.com - I have found this a great resource for any travel. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

For you, its close to the best dive sites. For her, its one of the best resorts on the island.

Plaza Las Glorias is closing for renovations at the end of this month. They will re-open
on 23 DEC. The best bet would be on the North end of the Hotel Zone. Its not far from town and a lot closer than Iberostar,Reef Club, Allegro, etc. El Cozumeleno, Coral Princess, Melia are good bets to stay...Good luck

Iberostar may be a bad idea, tho we're staying there for Thanksgiving, because our fave (PLG) is under renovation. I just read a review from a diver who stayed there in July. He said the Iberostar staff tried to block him from getting on & off of his independent dive operator's boat. Apparently, they are using a bogus 'bond' requirement to protecting their on-site resort-style operator, Dressel, who's reviews have deteriorated over the past year. I read the Dressel reviews at the travelnotes.cc site.
