I have not looked at the specs on these cameras but I suspect they are like the 740/5050 was when I was purchasing a camera. The 5050 was a better choice for underwater use (which is what I got). I do find it is lacking as a topside camera for my purposes. I was use to a 35mm with a 300mm lens and the 108mm of the C5050 does not have the telephoto that I was use to or wanted in a land camera. The 740 has a 10x lens which works out roughly to a 360mm lens. I think if I had to make a choice, could only buy 1 and both (or topside) were important, I would have gone with the 740 (770 now). My choice was made based on using it primarly as a UW camera so I got the 5050. If you have been using simple point and shoot cameras, then either would do nicely. One other thing to consider, the 770 uses only XD (I am assuming as the 740 did) cards which are still expensive and are really small. The 5060 can use both XD and CF cards (both in the camera at the same time and you can swap between then, even UW). CF cards are comming way down in price as compaired to the XD.
