I was looking at the Suunto Vyper, Sherwood Insight, Cressi Archimedes II, and Uwatec Aladin Tec 2G, Genesis React Pro. There was an old insight on sale too...

Sherwood Insight 3-Gauge Computer. CR3705 with reviews at scuba.com

What do you guys recommend? Are there any other older closeout computer/consoles floating around out there?

Planning on doing some deep diving and nitrox diving... and most likely twin tank.

SPG and a wrist computer. Console NG for tech.

I wanted to keep everything on a console and just wear a regular chronograph wrist watch. I'm leaning towards the Uwatec or Vyper.

RhoneMan has a sticky somewhere comparing many computers.

Do you want a conservative computer, or a "liberal" one. My opinion is to get a liberal computer, but don't red-line it from the start. As you progress, you will likely grow to appreciate the extra underwater time the non-conservative algorithms give you.

Not sure about Cressi, Uwatech, Tec, or Genesis, but Suunto uses a conservative algorithm and Sherwood is liberal.

I think the Suunto is adjustable, no? Are there any exotic features I really should be looking for that aren't available in most computers? I saw that the Uwatec goes beyond 50% F02 and you can get a cheap IR receiver off ebay or something to work with it.

I would check with your instructor. I think most will say no for console computer in tech. They want an old fashioned spg that will give you your air pressure without relying on batteries.

The console I'm looking at has an old fashioned SPG. I can always get a seperate depth gauge. Uwatec Aladin Tec 2G 3 Gauge Dive Computer Console

I won't need any special SPG as I'm not doing more than just some basic tech diving courses... rest of my stuff goes to 40% any way.

get what you want, since you're obviously not listening to the advice you asked for.

Well, you've been told by folks that know - because they are tech trained/experienced - that the type of console you are looking at is NOT appropriate for tech diving.

You've been told what you SHOULD get instead. (Plain old brass and glass SPG and a depth/timing device)

You've been told to ask your tech instructor, as he/she will for sure have specific do's/dont's gearwise - including I'm sure a pretty clear opinion about the Aladin.

If after all that, you still want to get what you want to get, good luck. There's only so much we can do for ya.

:cool2:

SPG + wrist computer. I like Uwatec Aladin Tec2g + my SPGs are all brass + glass types.

I'd be surprised if your instructor would be happy with you wearing a console if your goal is to do 'tech dives', I've only had instructors (other than my OW one) bag them out.

I used to have a console hose AI computer (Uwatec Smartcom). It seemed ok and I had no plans to upgrade it but then it died one day (low battery) and I used a wrist computer + SPG. I never ever dove with the console again. Maybe you should at least give what everyone here is suggesting a go.
