I want to plan a dive trip to Cozumel in a month or two. My problem is that my wife and my dive buddy's wife are not divers. This means that we need the best accomodations we can get so the wives can have a good time too. They will require a very nice ocean view room, a beach to enjoy, some snorkling, and really good food. Does anybody have a suggestion?

The Presidente http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/icon/hd/czmha is probably the best, although it's a bit pricey.

Cheers,

The Presidente if it is within your budget. You can often get lower rates August through October because it is technically low season.

Best beach on the island, snorkeling in front of the hotel, nice pool, good restaurants, excellent staff and services, salon and spa services, and for the divers, a pier for pick-up with your operator of choice.

Have fun!

Oceanview rooms are hard to find in southern AI resorts. I suggest you could look at El Presidente (I've never stayed there) or Fiesta Americana. Mostly iron shore beaches but both have some sandy access to the sea. Both have pretty good snorkeling and oceanview rooms. Taxi ride to town but should be affordable with 4 of you and gives you lots of eating options.

Frogman, we stayed at the Presidente last October and it was fantastic. Probably has everything you described, but be prepared to spend some money. We're booked for a trip in October again, and we've got reservations at another hotel, but we're seriously thinking about changing to the Presidente. Seems the other place has wishy-washy reviews on other websites.....I think I'll see what the folks on here have to say about it. Good luck on your quest, but I know you'll LOVE the diving!

Frogman,
My wife (a non-diver) and I stayed at the Fiesta Americana last November for a week. We loved it. It's an excellent A.I. You can dive with any dive outfit on the island because they will pick you up and drop you off right at the F.A. pier. Food was very good, drinks were excellent and the service was fantastic. She wants to go again this year. The snorkeling was excellent... she loved it. I dove with Black Shark. Check out their web site. We did the entire trip for 2 for one week from Newark, NJ for $1850.

My vote is for Occidental Grand. My (non-diving) wife and I have stayed there. It has everything you asked for in spades (other than the ocean-view room)

Second the opinion for the Presidente.

I just got back from Coz a few weeks ago (scroll down to read a long, opinionated trip report). We stayed at the Presidente. I can highly recommend it. I haven't stayed anywhere else in Coz, so I can't comment on other hotels. Snorkling is easy due to piers over the ironshore and ladders straight down into the water. Lots to see snorkling. Sandy beach is small and manmade, but quite nice and well kept. Tennis courts on site. Golf nearby. Fancy eatery was undergoing rehab while we were there, but the open-air cafe was quite good. Nice pool, though that is, as usual, where the kiddies hang out. We had a ground floor garden view room and loved it. Many ocean view and ocean front rooms are available, however. $5 cab ride each way to town. No fridge or safe in the room. Ice is made with purified water, but don't drink the tap water. Hotel only supplies 1 gratis liter of bottled water each day, so plan to buy more. It's expensive at the hotel. We bought water and bodacious quantities of cerveza at the "mini super" stores in town for cheap. Cheap water and soda is available also in the many farmacias in town. We took a large soft sided cooler to store our comestibles in.

Everyone says the Presidente is expensive, and it is. But it isn't as expensive as many comparable resorts we've visited in other dive destinations. Grand Cayman and Bermuda come to mind as being more expensive for similar quality resorts.

Put Turks & Caicos on that list as well!
