Location
Northern California - Bay Area
Hello! I have decided (very last minute) to take my husband on a short trip for his 40th birthday in November. Since we don't have a lot of time off, I would like a destination that does not take an entire day of travel each way. We live in Northern California, so I was thinking Western Mexico. We both dive, but I am pregnant, so I have to sit this one out. Being a good wife, however, I do want him to enjoy some nice diving and I CAN snorkel at least!! We loved Cozumel last year, but it takes too long to get there. Any suggestions of locations closer to CA - including hotel and dive ops? Any idea of the weather in Nov - Dec?

Thanks for your input!!

- Christine

Christine,

Go to Baja California Sur. You have Cabo, La Paz or even Loreto. I just got back from Loreto and had an absolute blast. Small resort (12 units) very friendly people. You can fly out of San Diego with I believe Air Mexicano on a 5 day, 4 night trip, 3 days of 2 tank diving for about $600. I don't have the website handy but if you look up Dolphin Dive Center, Loreto that is the dive ops on location at the Villas deLoreto.

I have a report in this section with some pics of the resort, dive ops and diving you may want to take a look at.

Thanks guys!! I would like to consider Cabo and La Paz as well. Which of the locations do you think has the best mix of diving and non-diving activities? Any good dives that can accomodate snorkeling as well? I know Steve will want to get a couple of dives in, but will probably spend most of his time with me either beaching it or exploring on land, so I am looking for something with good diving, but other fun diversions (hmm - that's an interesting word to use here - get it? DIVErsions - sorry I amuse easily) as well!

Thanks again for all the great info. The Lareto report was excellant! - C

Cabo is a bit on the toursity side (actually lots), but clearly is the best mix of u/w & topside. La Paz was a basic fishing village not that long ago, and while developing & not without charm, it does not have near the range of diversions of Los Cabos. In addition, Cabo has far nicer beaches, better snorkeling sites, and golf & lots of tennis opportunities.

If you go with Cabo San Lucas, stay at an upscale resort on the outskirts rather than in town. The Twin Dolphins would make a nice birthday present for both of you, although you'll want to rent a car to get around.

Hope this gets you started.
