Howdy,

Hate to waste a thread on a (more than likely) stupid question but my curiosity is killing me. Been lurking about for some time time now (PADI OW certified approx. 6 months and working on AOW) and really like this board.

Can someone enlighten me as to the whole "koolaid" thing? Or "drinking the kool-aid" or other variations on that theme. LOL
I see it bandied about here and there and can't figure out what the hell people are talking about. Doesn't seem to be a compliment but some folks seem to be busting each others chops good-naturedly as well.

'sup wit dat shee?

(thanks in advance)

It refers to being introduced to the DIR way of diving. The Jonestown analogy is due to the cultlike attitude of a very few DIR divers.

My guess is that it started out derogatory and has been adopted as a joke.

You'll also see references to "taking the red pill", which is from the movie "The Matrix."

"I see" - said the blind man.

Thanks for clearing that one up fellas. I appreciate your willingness to hep a brotha out.

That certainly explains why, whenever I did a search on "kool-aid" et. al., I kept getting referred to lengthy exchanges between forum members "discussing" :boom: ;) the pros and cons of the various philosophical approaches to scuba diving. A real eye-opener to say the least. I certainly ended up learning a lot from those exchanges while, at the same time, coming to appreciate how much there is yet to be learned.

Now that you question has been answered, I have one.

Where in Montana? I'm originally from the Bitterroot, Hamilton.

Now I live in Colorado. Nice to see MT represented.

Glad to hear that someone knows we're actually one of the "lower 48" lol :D Yep, I know the Bitterrrot Valley and the town of Hamilton quite well. Beautiful part of the state to be sure. I lived in Missoula for a while so I hunted and hiked a lot of country around there.

Eventually made my way to Helena to attend a local college and I've lived and worked in Helena for the past 20+ years. I was born and raised in Chicago but have pretty much "gone native" at this point. When I return to Chi to visit my family, I feel like like the hillybilly cousin come to town. :)

I got my kool-aid. lol

(That's me in the burgandy shirt in the middle.)

Sounds like ruzster is in Helena. I know a couple of friends I went to high school with live(d) in Helena. Jacquie and her husband own The Barrister B&B on Ewing. Beautiful place.

I did my open water cert in a local quarry called Spring Meadow Lake. My AOW is being done at Canyon Ferry Lake. This is one of 3 large lakes (the other two being Hauser and Holter lakes - named after members of the lewis and Clark expedition) created by hydroelectric damns along the Missouri river which has its head-waters in Montana. Haven't been there myself yet but divers from my club dive some of the lakes in Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. Mountain lakes abound, of course. Needless to say, this is all cold water diving but, in the summer, a 7mm wet suit is pretty much all you need if you can stand the initial shock. The crazies around here all own dry suits and dive all year round. In the winter, they just chop a hole in the ice and go for it! Honestly, I can't wait to give it a try myself.

Good Lord, it is a small world after all. (cue theme ride music) The Barrister is a beautiful B&B indeed! As a matter of fact, my sister moved out here to Montana a couple years ago and manages a B&B named The Carolina (http://www.carolinab-b.com) that's about a block and a half south of the Barrister on the same street. Helena has some beautiful B&B's but those are two of the nicest, IMNSHO.
