I've reached the point with our new computer where I need a professionals help, and I can't seem to find anyone on the island that can help. I've been through every trouble shooting method I can find. I would normally NEVER ask anyone to "work" on their vacation, but I will compensate in cash or dives - I am in serious need of help!

Any network administrators specializing in MS Office/Windows XP Pro coming down in the next couple of weeks willing to work for a few hours?

Main problem is with sharing excel files and outlook address book (so far). Basically, once I edit a shared file as the admin, it turns into a read only file, regardless of the fact that I did not set it up or save it that way. This eliminates my admin assistant's ability to update/edit the file...which defeats the entire purpose of having her help. FYI - I am using the same program, same files, etc. as we were using on the "old" computer - and never had this problem.

Please e-mail me at info@bluextseadiving.com if you are sincerely qualified and interested in helping out.

On the Excel Menu, under tools, have you selected "Share Workbook" and then checked the box for "Allow changes by more than one user at the same time"?

Does the file reside on a shared resource?

Do you have Exchange Server handling Outlook? Last I knew, it is required to share outlook data, such as contacts. There are some third party solutions....

Yes

Not sure exactly what you mean by this, but the file is in the shared documents folder, just as it was on the old computer. Is there something else you mean?

Not sure what you mean by this either. I am not actually trying to share outlook files or contact list. This is a different problem. When I try to access my address book, I get an error message that says address book couldn't be displayed; it may have been moved or deleted or you don't have proper permission. I DID copy my outlook file from my laptop to this computer, and I do this as a back-up everyday:
My computer/Cdrive/documentsandsettings/myusername/localsettings/applicationdata/microsoft/outlook

then I copy the data file over to a flash drive, then do the same thing to save it into my laptop as a back-up and vice versa - been doing this for two years without a problem.

Thank you for the reply :)

Wish I could be more help, but running down the prob would likely turn into Q&A. On the bright side, it sounds like an easy configuration issue and your contacts should be easily imported from the saved PST file. Ten minutes should about do the job.

Shall I send you my address so you can send tickets? I could be there by Wednesday! ;)

Yeh, I am sure it's a configuration issue that someone who knows what they are doing could fix in a few minutes...but I am not that tech savvy...and am hoping that with all of the computer wizzes out there, someone (who is already going to be here) is willing to give of a small fraction of their vacation time, with compensation of course :)

Thanks!

Wish I could help also. I'm no admin, I write software and only use outlook/office. If I got paid in dives for the work I do, I'd be so much more productive! :D

Good luck getting this problem resolved Christi.

Thanks Josh! It's been beyond frustrating and there's simply no way these files cannot be shared and edited by more than one person...I just can't figure out WHY! Haha!

I have my laptop at my side to look up e-mail addresses from my contact list....not very efficient use of my time...but all I can do at the moment!

Christi, I'm sure someone will offer to help remotely. Since you have XP Pro, you also have Remote Desktop. This will allow someone (you trust) to remotely access your system and fix this relatively simple configuration problem. If you can not find someone, I will offer the services of my IT guy. He is a wizard at this sort of stuff.

dont feel too bad, hubby once got an resorts system back online just before the start of a busy checkin & lunch period (restaurant wasnt talking to system either) and the free dives were well worth the 45mins work he had to do

good luck - i understand your frustration!

Christi - Maybe Alejandro? (The computer wiz on Calle 7 entre 30 y 25.) Dailene recommends him and would probably have his number. Or you can ask Nemecio if he knows anyone. Just thinkin' out loud. -D
