Hello all,

I work in diving, and dive everyday. Yesterday I did two dives, first one to 24m, second one to 22m, with a 1:15 surface interval. Water was 25°C, and the dives were easy, relatively low workload, safety stops on both dives, no yoyos, slow ascents. I made sure I stayed well hydrated.

On the second dive the only profile abnormality was interupting my safety stop at 5m to remove some fishing line below at 8m - I then redid the safety stop and ascended slowly (10m per minute) to the surface.

Coming up from the dive, I did have a bit of work on the boat - tank rack was full, had to move around tanks while still carrying my own, otherwise non eventful.

Felt tired on the way back, then after 45minutes or so increasingly nauseous, with a weird feeling in my stomach. After unloading the boat, which was harder than usual feeling quite weak, nausea was increasing.
I eventually made myself vomit at the pier.

On the way back (around 2 hours after the last dives), in the car, nausea increased, with vertigo, I started seeing stars like that one time I got very seasick on a boat a few years back, felt like I was going to pass out, vomit and have diarrhea.

I got dropped off at home instead of cleaning the gear and packing for tomorrow and stumbled to bed, where I felt terribly weak, with shallower breathing than usual, and also noticed I had pins and needles on the palms of both hands and soles of my feet.

When my wife got home 30 minutes later, we decided to call DAN - interview result was that there was the slight possibility of a neurological DCS hit, or just gastroenteritis / stomach issues.
My wife was sick (vomitting etc) 5 days ago, and I had just travelled to Kuala Lumpur two days ago.
I had felt great in the morning, so the rapid onset of symptoms were a little surprising.

DAN's advice was to see a local doctor to get a check up, including neuro, which I did.
Not very conclusive, I had started getting a mild fever by then, doctor confirmed that I had a mild loss of feeling in my hands, but that it was probably acute gastroenteritis, but that I should get chamber treatment if symptoms pointing more clearly to DCS developped.

I informed DAN and went to sleep. After a miserable 12 hours in bed, I woke up feeling weak, still with the pins and needles in both hands. Haven't vomitted or have diarreah, no difficulty urinating, not hungry and very tired.

Not really sure what follow-up to give to this, and what to make of the weakness and paresthesia. I've never had anything like this, and don't know if I should just rest and forget about it or pay it more attention.
I have the day-off today, and could possibly rest tomorrow as well.

Cheers,

b

id try and get to see a medical doctor with some understanding of diving physiology

Thanks. DAN told me to see a standard clinician. Since we are in an area where diving is a major economic activity, the doctor was rather aware of potential issues, asked for dive data and also gave me the address of the nearest chamber in case symptoms evolved.
There is no real specialist in this rural south-east asian area.

Hi @oppo ,

Did the vertigo clear up? Did the pins/needles feeling and weakness improve with sleep?

Best regards,
DDM

Hi there,

The vertigo/nausea passed in 12 hours, and ended up getting diarrhea which seems to fit with gastric angle.

Pin and needles in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet still felt today, 3 days later, and still quite tired.
Rested two days, then dived again today, 2 dives, no complications.

cheers

Localized paresthesia doesn't really sound like DCS, but if your symptoms are lingering, I would be concerned about seafood toxicity. Did you have fish anywhere around the time that these symptoms started? Article linked below.

That's good to hear, thanks!
I haven't had any seafood for the past few weeks though, but I'll look into it.

cheers,
