This discussion came up in a different thread and I thought I would start a separate thread to give others a heads up.

The statement was made that a diver was issued a NAUI Nitrox c-card prior to being certified as a diver, and never having to make a Nitrox training dive to receive his certification.

Below is the response I gave to the questions being raised.

NAUI offers two distinct programs for Nitrox training. If you take the class and pass the written exam you can qualify for the "Nitrox recognition card" without making any training dives. (The NAUI Nitrox Recognition card is available to divers and non divers alike)

If you pass the written exam and complete two training dives with your instructor you will qualify for your "Nitrox Diver certification card"

These are two totally different programs utilizing the same NAUI Nitrox training materials. The cards are also clearly marked to specify "Diving" or "Recognition"

Note: You can not obtain the Nitrox Diver c-card without having at least an OW c-card, and the two required training dives. (the Nitrox / OW classes can be combined. or the Nitrox class can be combined with most other classes.)

I hope that clears that up a little. If you have the recognition card just see your local NAUI instructor and complete the training dives and you will be issued the Nitrox Diver c-card.

If you have any questions I would be glad to help.

Thats pretty much the way I understand the system as well.

BTW, prodive69, you and I are nearly neighbors if you over look the roughly 100 miles between us:D

With everyone else having dropped the dive requirement, does NAUI *still* require the two training dives for the Nitrox diver cert? I know they did earlier this year when I got mine, but as of today, do they still?

so does the "recognition" card mean you can't actually dive Nitrox, or what exactly?

Hehe, Walter... Hyperbole, son, hyperbole.

What is the card that ScubaToys issues? You don't have to do dives in their classes, but you can dang sure dive nitrox when you're through, and it's a NAUI class as well.........

Hehe, Walter... Hyperbole, son, hyperbole.

Two points -

1. You're not my father.

2. Hyperbole is an obvious and intentional exaggeration. Yours was not obviously intentional. It appeared as if you were merely mistaken. Had you said something like "With everyone else having dropped the dive requirement a thousand years ago, ......." it would be hyperbole. As it stands, it's not.

My apologies for finally flying off the deep end and being inexcusably rude.

As for PADI-is-the-universe not being obviously intentional (especially coming from *me*), why don't I just forget the whole thing and leave the terseness to you from now on? Never in a million years could I ever aspire to your level, pops. (/me dope-slaps himself up the side of the head...)

(It's the endorphins from my insanely-difficult (for me) lap swimming this morning. Give me a few days, and I'll have adjusted. Oh, and next time I'll actually type the Foghorn Leghorn attribution so you don't have any difficulty understanding that it was *supposed* to be a lighthearted way of saying that I acknowledge that you were indeed more thorough than I. I forgot that you have a distinctly different sense of humor than those to which I have become accustomed.)

Incidentally...

Okay, so PADI dropped the requirement. Did SSI? Did NAUI? (Obviously, Walter did not, which is certainly beneficial for his students.)

NAUI has 2 NITROX cards. Both allow use of NITROX up to 40% but only the Nitrox Diver card requires 2 dives. One demonstrates that you passed the class and the other shows you passed the class and made 2 dives.
