I just recently got my OW certification and during this time I also got certified for Nitrox. My instructor advised me that since I was also getting Nitrox certified, that would be the only card I would get. I got my card which does state that I'm OW certified but I noticed that there is no certification number on the card. My fiancee who has been diving for 10 years has a C-Card that has her picture and certification number on it.

i guess my question is this: How can I find out what my certification number is? How can I go about getting my OW card if I choose to get one?

I find that when I purchase equipment, some information they ask is what my certification number is. I figured I ask here before going to my instructor. He does have a busy schedule so I'm attempting to not inconvenience him. Any assistance would be appreciated. thank you in advance.

NAUI no longer uses numbers for us. NAUI now only doles out numbers to divemaster/instructor levels. That said, it seems that I am only asked my "number" at PADI-centric locales, but that could easily be simple lack of experience on my part.

I suppose I could give them a few digits of my favorite phone number, eh?

Incidentally, would it be too much trouble to ask if you can post a photo of your card (with your name and all blotted out, of course)? I've never seen a combined OW/Nitrox NAUI card, and I'm quite curious. (I got two cards when I did both last April.)

NAUI cards do not have numbers on them unless they are cards issued for Asst Instructor, Dive Master or Instructor.

Also the NAUI cards don't have pictures.

With NAUI you have a PIN. The #'s are not printed on the card like they were many years ago. Can't figure why you would want an OW card? You had to have OW to get to EANx. For equip. purchases just put PIN/NAUI.

that pretty much sums it up. Thanks for the feedback. I also have the PADI Scuba Diver card and of course I was basing my inquiry on that since that card has a certification number and my mug (glad I do not have to show that to people). Thanks again for the feedback.

I'm not aware of any PIN with NAUI:confused:

NAUI used to put the letters "PIN" on the cards meaning personal identification number. One's SS # was used so they didn't want to put your SS # on the card. You can also just provide another 9-digit number.

I haven't seen a NAUI OW card in a while so I don't know if they still do that.

They no longer include a PIN or even have the word on the card. Additionally, they no longer use SSNs at all (my LDS blacked out the field on their forms, just to be sure nobody wrote theirs down).

Obviously, I don't know whether they've updated all their databases or what-have-you, but I have a nice card collection (next up, DM in 2007, probably), and they've never had my SSN (or asked for it). :D

Correct, my recent new NAUI NITROX DIVER card has no serial or PIN. It clearly states NAUI Worldwide NITROX DIVER on the front with my name, date of certification, Instructor and instructor number plus the dive facility I was certified at. On the back it has the NAUI Worldwide LOGO and Open Water Certified in big bold text at the bottom of the card under the text indicating the certification:

"This credential verifies that the individual named has demonstrated the open water skills and academic knowledge necessary to meet NAUI Worldwide Diving Course Standards and at the completion of the course was determined competent to dive open water. If a junior restriction is indicated on the front of the card the individual must be accompanied by a parent or designated guardian."

which is below my signiture and that of my instructor's. No photo or certification numbers. Its a full fledge C-card.

I believe that anytime you needed a reference # you're supposed to use your birthdate. Since you're 30, let's say your birthdate is June 24 1976, so use 06241976. Otherwise, they don't give out numbers unless you're pro status. If you're signing a log book & it asks for a cert # you can use that. I don't know why NAUI doesn't give numbers for OW cards like PADI does, it doesn't seem like it would be a big deal to do it.
