Heading there next week to maybe do some diving and wondering what it is like

Like most other beach towns. You can try Outer Banks Dive Center if you want to go out or even do a dive from the beach. Just be careful where they are going (or a lot of times trying to go) as the currents around Diamond Shoals can make for strong currents. A lot of good wrecks to dive, though.

There is also JT's boat Under Pressure out of Hatteras. Think there is a second boat out of Hatteras.

If you go on a boat be sure you make sure that the dives are within your comfort zone. There are a lot deeper wrecks that are dove. You may want to rent a DM.

Dave Sommers runs a boat out of Hatteras as well (the Lions Paw). Both are great operators. A little bit of a drive from Nag's Head, but whatever floats your boat. Definitely dive within your limits - there can be some tough conditions out there.

If you do make it down to Hatteras, the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum is worth checking out.

As to what it is like - there are some easy dives, and some more challenging dives. And, whether a site is one or the other depends on the day more than the site.

If you are going to be at Nags Head, definitely touch base with Outer Banks Diving. You can see their charter schedule online, you can read about the sites they go to, etc.

Hatteras is an hour's drive. Personally, I think it is worth it, but not everybody will agree. If you have a chance to go out with JT, you are in for a treat. Not only is his boat a great experience (A/C in the cabin, along with a frig, microwave, DVD, bunks to nap in on the way to and from a site, etc), but he is a very knowledgeable, and colorful, individual as well. There are some great wrecks available out of Nags Head and out of Hatteras (Dixie Arrow, Proteus, Abrams). Problem is, JT may not be actively running much next week.

Because - if you are interested in wrecks and wreck diving - you might want to go to the Hatteras Shipwreck Symposium (Hatteras Shipwreck Symposium 2013) while you are at Nags Head. JT has organized it, and the speakers and exhibits will be truly outstanding.

I had a great time with OBX. Weather mucked up their schedules, but they did everything possible to get us out.

I'll be there the week of 9 july. Please post a dive report and let me know which op you used and your experience.

wanchesemhc (Marc) mates on both of the Hatteras boats. He posts a lot of dive reports over on www.ncdiivers.com. If you have specific questions he might be of help. He likes to talk about diving in the area.

I'm going out to the U-701 and the U-85 (or at least trying to go out) last week of June and I will let you know.
