Just what exactly IS a "bubble stop"?

Just wonderin'...

Ron
Not sure....... it could be a 'deep stop' or a 'safety stop'. I have never heard of the term 'bubble stop'.

A deepstop is a short stop/pause at depth to slow down the total ascend and allow for more smooth offgassing. A safety stop usually is held in the shallows (20-10ft) to extend the shallow ascend allowing for more offgassingin the shallows. These stops are usually not 'mandatory' in rec diving. I deco diving these stops become part of the runtime schedule and are usually called 'deco stops'.

Ron, I think you may be asking about a "Bubble Check".
Thats when you check your buddies first stage and hoses for any bubbles which would indicate leaking.

I saw this term used on a graphic dive profile. x axis being time and y axis being depth. When the hypothetical dive started there was a "bubble stop" at three meters on descent. I wasn't sure what that was. So maybe THAT's what was meant, check for bubbles at 10' after entering the water.

SSI never taught me that one! :)

yup.........bubble check it sounds like

Bubble check is a check for bubbles - which is a sign that something is leaking. This is especially important for rebreather divers as there really shouldn't be any bubbles anywhere (at least for CCR, SCR is a different matter).

A bubble stop (microbubble stop) is a deep stop done in your decompression profile to help deal with microbubble formation on your ascent. Some computers that calculate deco for you such as the VR3 will incorporate microbubble stops. Excessive microbubble formation can be an issue as they may pass through the alveoli in the lungs and end up on the arterial side of the system, which of course, is not good. These bubble stops are supposed to help control the formation of microbubbles.

oops someone else got it first
