I left them a message begging to use their pool to test some gear, and they called today and said I could come any time from 10:00 - 11:00 am. I am very thrilled!

Ys has a scuba program of their own, and in general are always willing to let ppl dive in their pools.
At my local Y, they rent out their pool at a discounted rate to a dive shop to do courses, and scuba parties.

My Y is the same one that I took my PADI course at, and for my personal diving time they told me to just stay away from under the dive board, and try to stay out of the other swimmers way. I figured they would make me come during closed hours or something. Im really impressed.
Not all Y's will permit scuba in their pools, not even their own program for a YMCA cert. So it looks like you have a good one there. Use it and have fun getting use to your equipment

Noah, west suburban, the one off washington near the pike. Their new pool is great, and PG has free refresher courses there.
I have also gone there to try new gear alone, and had no problem.

Not really at a discounted rate. Ha Ha
Yes the Newton Y does allow scuba in their pool, but generally it has to be part of a class or organized PG Dive night. There is a big liability issue if something should happen and it's just a individual playing around with equipment. We are basicially taking responsibility for everyone that we bring over.
We do have time slots that are open for people who want a refresher or just to try gear. We obviously would prefer that the person was a customer of PG Dive.
We also try to limit what type of equipment goes into there nice new pool. Generally no doubles and we only use coated weights, definitely no shot pouches or ankle weights (I've seem them leak lead shot).

In Oklahoma City the Northside YMCA (in The Village) has done scuba diving courses. I don't think they allow divers in the pool other than that, however.
Westside YMCA, where I go, let's me use my snorkel gear for lap swims and general exercise. This has led to some interesting discussions with other swimmers.
You might check with your local colleges and universities. Oklahoma City Community College has Scuba Tuesdays, which gives us a chance to practice our skills in the winter.
