My wife and I recently went on a diving vacation and had a bit of trouble with the weight of our carry on bags.
They told us we could only take 22 Lbs as carry on. So there we are tearing into out carry ons right in the middle of SFO, and trying to decide which item we would rather have stolen, the Digital camera, the regs, the Computors Etc. For the trip home my wife decided that she was going to put her regs into her checked baggage, but keep the Computor in her purse, as it was so small and expensive, she felt it would be easy to stick it in ones pocket and steal it out of our checked bags. End result is that she carried that darned hockey puck around in her purse for a couple of months after she got home (if you have ever seen the inside of her purse, you'd understand). When she finally found it during an exploratory dig, the lens was all scratched up to the point you can barely read it. First time she had used it too. I was a bit Pixxed off about the way she had treated it, but she reminded me that it was hers, and none of my bis how she treated it, but I digress. what can we do to fix it, short of returning it to the factory for repairs?

You could try polishing the face with toothpaste or brasso, that will often get the lighter scratches out. for the deeper stuff, I'm not sure.

You might be surprised that when it is taken underwater..it can be read fine. The water becoming a natural magifier.

Go to a local motorcycle shop. They sell a Plexiglas polish/cleaner that works pretty well for taking out scratches. Use a soft cotton cloth, aka - teeshirt and rub with a circular motion. If the scratches are deep it will take a while with mucho elbow grease, but it does work!

I you go to a small airport or even a better Auto parts store get a produce called Maguires #40. It is what is used to remove scratches from airplane windows.

toothpaste/mask cleaner works really well, but there are products that are better if the scratches are deeper and/or on plastic, as opposed to glass.

Novus scratch remover comes with 3 bottles - #1, #2, and #3. If the scratches are deep, start with #3 and rub perpendicular to the scratch. Once you've rubbed out the bulk of the scratch, or if the scratch wasn't that deep to begin with, use the #2 bottle to get rid of the smaller scratches. #1 will get rid of the finest scratches.

I've used Novus on watch crystals, my iPod, my Vt Pro, thin aluminum panels, etc. etc. etc... It's great and has saved multiple items that I would have sworn were beyond saving.

Locally, my bed bath and beyond sells Novus, as does container store. If neither are local, it's available all over online.

TLada:
Unless the scratches are deep gouges, you'll never notice em underwater.

Absolutely...
To convince yourself, drop the computer in the sink and have a look. Fine when wet. Same is true of the lexan covers on many video camera housings. Users don't sweat scratches because they dissappear underwater...
