how do you get the background to go completely black like that? i have a photo or two i want to do that with, but am unsure of how to use photoshop to accomplish it.

Bluthundr - Increasing the shutter speed and shooting towards empty space/into the blue will give you a dark background. Then you'll be able to adjust it a lil bit with PS.
