Today I,as part of my DM internship was asked to conduct a scuba review:D . My instructor was in the water(pool) the whole time with an ow class. Everytime I looked over I think he was watching me. I've assisted in the ow cert of about 30 people including 9 jr ow. I've also helped with 6 advanced and 1 rescue course after my own. The man I did the review with today has been out of the water for a few years but it soon came back to him. I could not have asked for a better person for my first teaching experience where all my instructor did was observe. We went thru all the basics, gear set up, weighting, safety checks etc then got in the water. Did mask clearing, reg recovery, buoyancy checks and getting neutral as well as ooa and weight/gear replace and remove. Basicly I went over everything. Did three types of entries and proper ascent and descent. After getting out of the water I debriefed and asked him if there was anything else he needed to go over. He said could not think of anything and thanked me. While I was breaking down my gear he went into the locker room with my instructor who later told me he was very pleased and that he thought I was very thorough and that he was comfortable enough with my review that he felt he would have no problems on his upcoming trip. I found this out after everyone had left. But as he came out of the locker room he walked up to me, thanked me again and said he would like to take care of me. I said it was not necessary but he handed me a bill anyway. I thanked him and put it in my trunks. As I was getting dressed I pulled the bill out. It was 20 bucks! I never expected this. The review itself was only 25 that we charge. I still feel good!:D This is the first monetary compensation I've received as a diver.:14: The shop gives me air and discounts and lets me try out stuff but a student has never tipped me before. I can say no one has ever failed to thank me for my help but this feels different. Since i really don't need the cash in my pocket right now I'm thinking of framing this bill. What do ya all think?

Congratulations! I am sure you did a great job and deserved it.

I am sorry tosay that the tip will be all too rare. People don't realize how little the people who do this kind of work get paid, and the job is not on the usual list of jobs that get tips. In many cases, they think they are giving you a little extra; in reality, they are doubling your pay.

If you want something to frame, take a picture of it instead.

If you frame it, you'll just feel all that much more shame when the day comes that you smash it open to buy air fills... :D

I hear ya!! Thanks:D :D :D

Just make sure now that you let the IRS know to claim it on your taxes next year:D

Why the smiley? Are you suggesting that there are people who don't report 100% of those tips? Can't imagine that.

I've thought of that! Going to talk to my tax preparer. The fact that I received a tip for my services and being that is considered compensation there may be a whole lot of new business expense write offs:D :D :D . Anyone know if this is true?

Of course.

If you are being paid for your work, then you are in business. If you have expenses, then they are write-offs. That includes your insurance, your dues, your training expenses....

Fish_Whisperer:
And gear expenses, too. Definitely. :D

My tax guy thinks this is a little dicey. You need to be able to show if challenged that you use the gear for instruction and not personal pleasure, or at least principally so. It is probably pretty safe, though.

Does anyone have better info?
