I discovered the ocean is made of very nasty salt water...
gaaakkk pfffftttt....

I discovered when the swell is good for surfing, there is something called surge...
and that makes it hard to dive around spiney sea urchins and coral...

I discovered that breaking waves stir up the bottom and make it very difficult to see...
and micro particles of sand later turn up everywhere...

Snowbear suggested I post about my recent discover scuba dives with my husband Uncle Pug in Maui. I was able to do two half hour dives out in front of the condo where we were staying in Kihei.

We had to swim out thru a narrow channel in the rocks. There was an unusual amount of surge and wave action and the visibility was so bad I couldn't see the bottom even tho it was only 10 feet deep. Last year in this same place I snorkeled and saw turtles, fish and coral. This year the winter swell came early, and diving conditions weren't the best.

But...I did find a huge cowrie shell and pointed it out to UP. He picked it up and showed me the critter living inside, then gently put it back.

I did have great equipment. A new back plate from Deep Sea Supply, and a Halcyon wing. I also had my Apollo Bio Fins...which I WON naming Snowbear's boat.

Well... sometime I might try again but UP said if I decide to take a class it has to be from NWGratefulDiver.

so... did you have fun??

lol - i'm glad you at least are trying... i'd give a million bucks for
my wife to try scuba =)

Hey "Wishful" glad to hear that the great one got you out. Run, drive, swim, make a pie every week for NWGD... do whatever you have to, to take classes from Bob. This time next year you can be joining us in Port Hardy! That way UP won't be wishful that you were there to share it all with him. :D

We were emptying the sand out of our swimsuits for days afterwards. :D

One of our dives this week was like an old movie I remember of a guy lost on Mars, and trying to travel through Martian sandstorms -- complete with the eerie soundtrack (whale song). The viz was, simply, familiar :)

Great report!! Now you're ready for some local kayak diving! :D

I think I recognize that place ... is there a small (for maybe 12 cars) public parking lot and a walkway behind those bushes leading to the beach? If so, that's where I went snorkeling on my first day in Maui ... when they wouldn't rent me a tank because "vis is only 10 feet and it's not worth diving" (the dive shop's version of events). We saw many turtles, even though they almost swam into us before we saw them.

Wishful Diver ... I would be thrilled to be your scuba instructor ... :D

There is a parking lot for surfers a hundred yards or so to the right.

This is actually a pretty cool dive site.
Last year I spent three hours there averaging 12' with a single AL80.
This year with the swell wrapping around the island it was blown out completely most days we were there.

Turtles... yes, lots of turtles. I was even able to get a few pictures.
