Just posting as a happy dad. My 22 yr old daughter is visiting my wife and I in Singapore. She talked about getting certifying while a she was a university student in SOCAL. That never happened.

Finally, she decided to get certified in SE Asia. She completed six hrs of theory, without videos? Last night was her first pool session, with a 1:1 student-instructor ratio. Currently she passed the swim and treading water test, set up her rig, the giant stride, buddy check, lots of hovering and multiple laps around the pool without her mask. It's fun to watch the class from a distance.

After the Singapore pool sessions, she will go to Padang Bai, Bali for her OW class that includes additional pool sessions, six open water dives, and Nitrox certification.

If she has fun and is interested, she will stay in Bali for the week and continue her AOW class. The classes come with PADI certifications, but taught by a GUE instructor. More later...

One more post, from a smiling dad. As it turns out, my daughter completed most of her tasks in than I realized, including taking her tank off underwater a few times, a 30 m UW fin without wearing a mask, clearing it and doing it again. Taking rig off in the surface and sitting on the tank and using her inflator hose to slowly go up and down and putting her gear back. In Bali, she will use a BP and wing for the additional pool sessions and following OW dives.:D

With training like that she'll get used to the good life! Where's the cold water, bad viz, poorly fitting equipment every new diver should go through?
Sounds like good training. Somethings seem to be extra to the PADI programme.

Redshift - you are correct. She is getting her PADI training from a GUE tech instructor. I thought that the skills she learns will much more enable her to become an independent and engaged diver. So the programme is more like a GUE light+PADI with Nitrox. The lecture was 5 hours, with no video, lots of theory, gas management, and dive planning. The only problem is that her class equipment will be all Halcyon - a very expensive option. I wonder what her AOW will cover.

You can get the same setup without the "H" at a more affordable price.

its great that your daughter in getting some quality instruction (rare in singapore) but dont be forced to buy some expensive halcyon gear immediately. i think all new divers should get lots of experience diving in the shop gear and trying out different equipment before deciding to purchase their own.

Wow, its wonderful to see such helpful and supportive comments. I agree that we will hold off on equipment purchases for a while, except for wetsuit, fins, and mask. She will also use standard rental quality BCD gear, so she has experience with typical recreational setups. I asked her a few questions, she is a bit bossy about it - goes with the age.
