For years it was standard practice to inform all students we took to Mt Storm to instruct them that shouls an incident occur to not try to use their cell phone in the parking lot. This was due to not only a lack of a reliable soignal but any signal at all for many. On-Star and Sat phones obviously worked. Until yesterday morning for me that was a reality. I had just told students on Saturday that if there was a problem they needed to get a reliable line of communication by going up onto the road out of the parking lot or to go across the dam to the guard shack for the power plant or down to the Stained Glass Restaurant.

Yesterday morning I realized I was looking at someone talking on a cell in the parking lot. I checked my own phone and saw to my amazement 5 bars! Full cell signal. Even better than up on the road coming to the lake.

This is a huge positive development. In the event of an accident crucial minutes can be saved by activating EMS faster from the shore itself. I spoke with at least on other instructor who was surprised by this. Pass it on.
