I can't get my new mouse to work. As there are a lot of PC savvy people on this board I thought I'd ask here. I know this is not very scuba related but I do intend to use my new mouse for surfing.

I've just bought a new Genius Optical Scrollwheel PS2 mouse (A netscroll+ eye). Just plugging it into my lap top it worked fine except for the scroll wheel. I installed the driver supplied which added a new control panel but still no scroll wheel. I plugged it into my friends laptop and the wheel worked. I plugged my friends USB mouse into my laptop and her wheel worked.

I've downloaded half a dozen different drivers of the 'net and still nothing. I phoned Genius technical support, I think the genius name in ironic.

If anyone out there in the ether can help I would be very happy.

Thanks
Nick

Mouse - Genius netscroll+ eye, PS2
PC - IBM thinkpad 560Z with a built in nipple mouse
OS - windows 98

Go to the control panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel).

Double click System.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Click the + next to mouse.

Right Click and delete any listed mice.

Reboot with your new mouse plugged in. Use the manufacturer-supplied driver disk when it prompts you.

OR...

Contact IBM tech support. Their hardware can be buggy when adding non-IBM stuff.

First thing that comes to mind. The driver for IBM's little eraser mouse might be interfering. It "emulates" a PS/2 mouse. You may have to disable it in the bios (if you can).
Since you should (or risk permanent damage to the port) always make sure a PC is of before connecting or removing a PS/2 device, where USB is hot swappable (in many cases, the PC should be on, before connecting the device), I'd recommend just dumping (returning) the Genius mouse and get a USB model the same as your friends that worked. :bonk:
