I'm still pretty new at underwater photography; this was my second trip with an underwater camera but I think I'm starting to get the hang of using the manual mode. Thanks to Alcina and others on this board whose advice has shortened the learning process for me.

My camera is the Canon A85 with WP DC-30 housing and internal flash only.

Any improvement advice would be appreciated.

Richard -

You did good!! I love the details in the eyes of the turtles - excellent capture of motion in the second one, too.

And the threespot damsels - great job to get a facing shot!

Haven't had time to look past page three, but you can bet I'm going back later :)

Looks like you are doing a good job of getting into the internal flash range - the fairy baslet has great colours! I think you could probably tweak curves on the turtles and a few others to really get some nice colours...looks like on a few your flash may have just dusted the subject and that there will probably be some colour information there if you fiddle in PS a little bit.

Great job - looks like a fantastic trip!!

Great pics, you make me long even more for my trip to Roatan. I really liked the sunsets, and can't way to try one out myself.

Thanks Alcina for the feedback regarding flash range and additional PS work. I am using Microsoft Digital Image Editor for my editing work. Don't know how this software compares with PhotoShop, but it does seem to have a lot of color curve correcting ability. I tried editing the shots of the turtles again to try to bring out more color, but didn't have much success without ending up with something that did not look natural.

If anyone is familiar with both the Microsoft and Photoshop software, I would appreciate feedback regarding whether it would be worthwhile to switch to Photoshop Elements 3.0.

Thanks

Very nice pics.

I went through your gallery and you have some really nice pictures. Considering you have used only an internal strobe and it is only the second trip with UW camera you have done a good job. Does not look like it’s only the second time…

Beside the Turtle and the Threespot Damsel I like the Coral crab, the Juvenile Threespot and also the Trumpet fish and many many more I will not listed here.

BRAVO!!

I had a really quick play in PS...hit the auto levels and auto colour first just to see what would happen and there was some definite possibility. So I undid that and went into curves...I selected the red channel and got fiesty with it to really give him some ooomph, less fiesty on the other two channels. Having seen these guys on the surface plenty of times I know what a "real colour" should look like and you've got enough info in the image to get there pretty much - have a play. If you have selective colours option, go into red and boost the black a little - I found this took the red edges out of the fins that I caused by boosting the red curve.

Have fun...

Sorry I can't help with your software!

Image #41, a Flamingo Tongue?

I’m a Microsoft Picture It person too, wish I could help, still pretty clueless myself with a cheesy camera. Really great photos – great job!

Thanks for all the positve comments. Though my experience with underwater photography is limited I have to admit to having done a lot of above water photography over the years. I must also admit that my first two trips with an underwater camera included 50+ dives so I got a lot of practice in a short amount of time.

Again, I give the credit of my success so far to the folks on this board who have posted great advice and tips.

Alcina, I will try your tips regarding the color curves this evening when I get back to my home computer.

Thanks again.
