Wasn't sure if I ought to post this here or in the travel section.

I have a good friend who is an aspiring novelist. She is looking for a possible way to have a couple of divers in the Monterey Bay area go missing. She needs to know if there are any well or little known diveable caves or wrecks in the area. Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance (I know somebody on here has the answer!)

Is she looking to kill them herself to make the story authentic?

Don't know of any wrecks... but they could always get tangled in kelp, get mistaken for a sealion and be taken by a great white, or just get swept out to sea by a current... oh yeah or get narc'ed out and see how deep the bottom of the Monterey Canyon is :)

They once found what they believe to be a giant squid out of the Mariannas Trench near Monterey Bay. She could have them be eaten by a giant squid.

(This is actually true, one of my neighbors was on the team from Scripps Institute of Oceanography that went up to investigate the findings with the team from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.)

This is a new tack - good one, Corsair.

LD - are you serious? IS there anything online about this giant squid? That would be a novel (or perhaps really old-fashioned) way to kill off the characters in the story... :p

Basically she's looking for a plausible (and incorrect) story for the coast guard to give to an insurance company.

Hopefully this will help. I did send her the link to this thread.

She has been known to put her books online. If she does, and anyone is interested, I will post the URL here.

Oh, Keralucu......BAD PUN!!!!! Novel way to kill them? Has Neptune Divers considered a pun tax on Scubaboard? We'd have more money than we know what to do with, and in just a few days-worth of bad jokes! :D

There are two unintact wrecks a half a mile off of Cypress Point, in about 25 feet of water. The SS Flavel (wrecked in1923)and J.B. Stetson (wrecked in1934) were wooden hulled ships that ventured too close to the point. The "Diver's Guide to Monterey" may have more pertinent information for your needs. Then again, the divers could always be kidnapped by foreign golfers at Spyglass Country Club. Though anyone who could afford a membership probably doesn't need ransom money.

Maybe they could be "disappeared" by irate wealthy locals for refusing to pay the $8 toll on 17 Mile Drive to get to a dive spot...

Actually I dove Monterey today, and had to fend off a creep in the carpark who was very interested in me as I changed out of my wetsuit... much to the chagrin of my female dive buddy who he totally ignored after having a quick stare at her chest! eeeeek!!!

So maybe there could be a serial killer in the book, known as the "Octopus Stangler", for his trademark M.O. of luring unsuspecting divers to his R.V in the carpark and strangling them to death with their octopus hoses!!!

Since I'm from "Jersey",and have never dived in Cal., I can't help with the original question, but , with all the various suggestions, and thinking about the many other "unique" posts I've read, I'd like to suggest a book about the folks on Scubaboard....but then, who'd ever believe it??
Take care,
Mike

but you're right, whoever would believe the stories?

LOL, Corsair - PUN COMPLETELY UNINTENDED!! but I will accept full credit for it... :p *groan*
