CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. - A Coast Guard helicopter rescue crew airlifted a man off a chartered fishing vessel 20 miles south east of Cape Hatteras today around 2 p.m.

The 50-year-old man from Miami chartered the 41-foot vessel, Sea Bear, to go diving at the Monitor Marine Sanctuary off the North Carolina coast.

The man apparently resurfaced from a 235-foot asscent unconcious and without a pulse. The crew of the Sea Bear began CPR and administered oxygen to the man. Shortly after the crew of the Sea Bear began first aid, the man regained his pulse and breathing, and aproximately 30 minutes later, the man regained conciousness.

The helicopter rescue crew transported the man to the Sentara Leigh General Hospital in Norfolk, Va., for treatment.

The diver in question (who hasn't been identified yet, as far as I know) started on his O2 bottle at 70 feet, rather than his other mix. He toxed when he hit his 30 foot stop. There's quite an active discussion about this on TDS, but to summarize, we're still waiting to determine how he had slung his bottles, what the exact markings were and why his buddy didn't catch the mistake (if he had a buddy.)

Also, per the expedition leader, the toxed diver is doing fine with no apparent injuries.

Well that just makes him the luckiest person on the planet this week, doesn't it.

It's really nice to hear about it ending well for a change.
