Ok, call me a moth to the flame...

Here's a thread for polite informative discussion of a personal choice in deco theory.... And the perceived anecdotal risks and current medical research relevant.

Just in case the topic hasn't been beat to death from all angles.

Starting the thread out, one of my mentors taught me the basics and he has successfully used it for years as well as a sanity check his dive computer. I am working towards adding it to my toolbox as well.

Duck and cover,
Cameron

As a relatively new diver and a youngster I'd like to hear out the rest of you.

I love math and have a mild distrust automated systems. Carefully applied ratio deco does seem to me to be a valuable resource and I know responsible divers who have thousands of respectable dives who have applied the theory successful to get them safely home again.

Of course our dive computers apply theories based on current medical research to get us home safer when working as they should and followed carefully, same to a lesser degree tables. And it is easier (I do dumb things) to follow them.

Thanks for asking.

Regards,
Cameron

assuming it's a "mild" dive, my computer is my primary, my buddies computer is my secondary, and some sort of ratio deco is some **** really went sideways. Remember with ratio deco though you still have to have a bottom timer/backup computer/depth gauge+watch and with decent dive computers being as inexpensive if not moreso than a bottom timer, I'd just use that instead.

Which Ratio Deco?

The one that approximates the tables it was derived from? Or the other that is 'superior' to any deco algorithm out there?

I was introduced to the derivative, without brand and marketing affiliated.

Otherwise this may just become an agency discussion.

I have voted 'Unaware of it' That's not true but, it's the nearest option. I am aware of it but haven't made any study of it so can't give much of an opinion.
GUE and UTD teach it so there must be something worthwhile there.
You have piqued my interest, I will have to look further in to it.

I don't really get it. Why not just plan your dive ahead of time and put both that and a contingency plan on your slate? I also really like math, but even in the absence of narcosis, mental mistakes are easy. It's the same reason I put my MOD in big numbers on my deco tanks instead of the actual O2 percentage. The fewer calculations I need to do on the fly, means fewer possibilities for error.
