Hi, just wondering if anyone has seen mantas in Misool? There are pictures on the website, but nowhere else does it seem like people have seen them in Misool...

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

I was just in the Misool area on a liveaboard and while we did not see mantas, others on the boat saw several mobula rays. We did however, have a great dive with mantas further north - near Kri Eco resort - at the Manta Sandy site.

When we dived Misool and Triton Bay, our dive director (this was with a company that has been in RA for many years) said we wouldn't see any mantas ... and he was right. :depressed:

Just curious ... what website are you referring to?

If you want to see the Mantas in south Raja Ampat (near Misool Eco Resort), you should either dive with Misool Eco Resort or one of the very few liveaboards that has been operating in the area for a long time such as Pindito or Shakti.

Reason: they know where the manta site is. Most of the liveaboards now in south Raja Ampat have only been operating in the area for a short time (2 years or less) and don't know where the site is.

We saw a single manta at Misool in March, when diving near Misool - sadly I have no image as evidence. The manta came from out of the blue and buzzed us on a fly by - very cool. I am not aware of any "manta sites" close in to Misool, but we did see numerous mantas at Manta Sandy a few days later:

Was diving with Peter Hughes on Paradise Dancer 18 months ago - saw Manta's on three separate dives three separate sites. One was a specific Manta dive. Don't think the Manta sites in Raj Ampat are a deep dark secret.
