Hi there,

Does anyone know if there were Minke Whale sightings at the ribbon reefs already??
It is stated that the season starts in June and lasts till August.

I am in Cairns at the moment and waiting for a good moment to go on a cruise (probably with Taka) and see Minke Whales next to the outstanding diving on the ribbon reefs.

Thanks!!

Yes there has. Mike Ball are starting their Minke expeditions and Taka spend yesterday morning snorkelling with them for over 2 hours.

Spirit of Freedom were also lucky enought to swim with a whale shark at Osprey Reef on the 9th June and it made the national news as this is quite rare here. One of the instructors got great footage.

So I would expect them to be sighted on the majority of all future trips now.

Not too many places left on Taka now, but worth getting in early if you want to guarantee a place.

Hi Ingmar,

There is a great special offer on Taka - see here - for their Cod Hole and Ribbon Reefs trip but it leaves this afternoon (15 June) .....

yeah we made it to the trip with Taka that left on June 15th to the Cod Hole.

It was beautiful and we spotted the Minke's so we were able to snorkel with them for 1,5 hours or so. Amazing creatures!

Thanks for your help guys!

We had one of the first sightings of them 3 weeks ago and I can tell you that they are pretty cool. We had a chance to go snorkeling with them and then saw them at the tail end of our dive. Truely an unforgettable experience!

Yes. Its all within the Marine Park reserve and still Australian Waters. Its only outside Australian waters where the Japanese hunt the whales.
Its just a worry that the whales have to pass throught International waters to calve and this is when the Japanese get them. They are safe while within our waters and there are very strict rules about how and when you are allowed to interact with them.
