Just had a chat with the folk at Mike Ball about their minke whale itineraries in June, and it seems like they sacrifice the trip out to Osprey to hang around the Ribbon reefs to look for whales instead. I really wanted to do both the minke whales and Osprey reef. Do any of the other operators do both in the same trip? Or would I be stuck doing the minke whale trip with Mike Ball and a trip out to Osprey with another dive op?

Advice appreciated!

The whales migrate and between July and September sightings are almost (not guaranteed and this is why Mike Ball hang around to ensure sightings) guaranteed.

If you book on either of the above in these months you would have a very good chance of diving with them.

They can start as early as June, but July and August are the best months and it would be unusual to have a trip returning without a sighting.

Thanks for the info, especially about the timing of the migration. I'd really been hoping to fly up for a trip mid-June, but I can probably put it off until July if the whales are more likely to be around then.

Mid June should be fine. Really depends on water temperatures etc., that cause them to migrate. Sightings have occurred as early as May, its just June to September is considered the best time, so Mid June they would be around, but July may be better.

You can always keep an eye on our Facebook page or some operators sites etc., because as soon as they appear posts get put up everywhere.
