BREAKING: One man dies, another airlifted with injuries as lobster miniseason starts, police said

Two major incidents have been reported by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at start of lobster miniseason:

• A man died after losing consciousness at Sawyer Key. He was pronounced dead at Lower Keys Medical Center Wednesday morning after losing consciousness in the water at Sawyer Key.

The sheriff's office said 911 Communications Specialists were notified at approximately 7:10 a.m. that a man was preparing to dive for lobsters when he began to struggle in the water.

A nearby good Samaritan helped with CPR. The man was brought to Sugarloaf Key and then taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Autopsy results are pending.

The man’s name, age and address are being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

• A man was airlifted after being struck by a boat propeller off the Lower Keys. He was airlifted to a Miami hospital after his leg was struck by a boat propeller Wednesday morning.

The sheriff's office said 911 Communications Specialists were notified at approximately 8:25 a.m. of the incident.

The patient was taken to Cudjoe Key and then to Sugarloaf Key where Trauma Star airlifted him to a Miami hospital. It was not immediately clear to which hospital the patient was en route.

The man’s name, age and address are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
