Yup, interesting... thanks!

The facial nerve runs through the middle ear, and in a significant percentage of cases, the bony covering is weak or incomplete. That's why you occasionally will see a child get a facial paralysis with an ear infection. Same issue with barotrauma related facial paresis...

Oy, one more thing to worry about when diving!
