I have a fish ID book, but I have nothing to help with other creatures. Any suggestions?

What are these?

If it was attached to the substrate, it's possibly some sort of soft coral. (The one I'm thinking of is an "elephant ear". Otherwise, ya got me.

Was it hard or was it soft? If you were in the Caribbean or Indo-Pacific I would've tagged it as a Montastrea variety. I'm not so hot with California invertebrates.

I did not touch it. And yes, I did spot it in California, at Carmel to be more exact.
