I don't have any advice to give you at this point since I'm not single and haven't really explored any of the night life and mingling you're talking about. But I'll be in Tulum next week for a week and hopefully can give some advice on a dive op after that. FWIW I do have a thread on here asking about what dive ops are good, etc. so maybe check that out.

I went out with an outfit called Blue Life while I was in Tulum, and it was a really good experience. I have no complaints about my couple days out diving with them.

As for night life. There are generally lots of good jungle parties out there. I caught Martinez Brothers, Richie Hawtin, and Damian Lazerus at these amazing jungle / Cenote parties when I was there just a few months ago.

sounds to me like you might be better off staying in playa del carmen. no shortage of things to do there. but if you want to be close to the cenotes and/caves then tulum certainly cuts way down on the travel time each day.
