Well, you don't tell us where you're diving, but anywhere except in the brightest tropical waters, I'd recommend a Salvo 21W HID can light. It's hands down my favorite piece of gear.

Snap the tip off of a steak knife and you've got a 1 dollar knife that will last forever and is easily replaceable if lost.

Well, the cheap knives I got from the dollar store are rusting from a few trips through the dishwasher, I doubt they would last very long in saltwater.

I got a 5th D-X "Essentials of Recreational Diving" DVD from my brother-in-law. My only disappointment is that it isn't subtitled, so doesn't help me too much. Ah well!
