hey all,

Love the Ikelite housing, but wondering if using a 14 gb housing is not recommended due to issues with heat?

An article on CNet recommended 2gb memory max with the Canon housing. Does this hold true for the Ikelite?

Thanks,
Jon

Wow, that's a huge card. Shooting video I presume? How much is one of those suckers worth?

I should add that you may be better off using several smaller cards, all your eggs in one basket thing, especially if you can't download at the end of the day you can just change cards. I'm thinking they would be much cheaper as well.

Edit: Well, you can tell I haven't bought any new cards lately, the price is more than reasonable for even 16GB cards. I'm not sure about the heat thing though but I think the heat from the camera itself is more of a problem than the card.

I'm not sure how the capacity of the card, relates to the amount of heat produced. Also there is several threads on here discounting the issues with heat and the canon housing.

One thing to consider when buying a SD card is write speed. Alot of the larger or cheaper cards have really slow write speeds, which could impact the ability to adjust your settings and take that next shot when using RAW mode. If you don't plan using the RAW mode, then write speed would probably never be an issue. I would rather lose a little capacity and gain the write speed.

Thanks for the responses.

Correction: It's a 16 gb card, and it's rated as class 6, so it's fast.

I wasn't sure if the card would affect the heat that the camera gave off.

Diver Dennis - the idea was to use a larger card so as not to have any restrictions as to how much media I could capture while underwater... avoiding having to open the housing to swap memory cards between dives.

The cards have continued to drop a great deal in price.

Just did 11 dives with a 8GB class 6 SDHC in my G9 with Canon housing - no heating/fogging problems at all. Used a photo bank to download imaged every night. I shoot RAW+JGP and a 2GB card would not be enough to do 2 dives.

I'm amazed at the prices now. I use Sandisk and they have 16GB cards for less than $200. I've paid that much for a card less than half that capacity.

One thing about the write speed of cards, most of them are limited by the camera and not the other way around so you may not need an extremely fast card. Most people do not shoot in bursts underwater anyway.

I love my 16gb class 6 card in the G9. I do believe you get what you pay for with the memory cards. I have not seen any heating issues, but have compared my read-write speed with a friend's "no-namer" card of supposedly equal caliber.. Either our cameras are built differently (bot G9s) or I got a steroid-using card, or his card's on crack cuz his speed is noticeably slower...
