Now that the Caymans have sort of opened up, I am going to try and head down to the Brac for a few weeks. One of the new entry requirements is medical insurance that includes Covid coverage. Has anyone recently bought any and what was your experience with that company. Thanks in advance and be safe.

We have been using Safetrip from United Healthcare for annual out of country medical coverage. In 2021 it specifically said in the cover letter that COVID was included in the coverage the "same as any other sickness".

I did have to call them to add all the possible countries that we planned to travel to in the "To Whom It May Concern" cover letter since you could only put a single country in by yourself online.

Haven't re-enlisted yet for 2022, but plan to when this year ends.

Edit: I just tried to sign up for next year and can't get past the first step online. Not sure they are offering it again in 2022. Phone number: 800 732-5309 is only good Mon-Fri business hours.
Update: Called this morning and was told that they no longer offer the Annual Plan, but do provide insurance on a per-trip basis. Web site will give you an immediate quote.

I've used Trawick International for a few trips. I've never had to file a claim but it is dirt cheap ($30-40 for a 2 week trip) and they specifically state that they cover Covid like any other illness. They'll cover meals/lodging in quarantine if you test positive with the "trip delay" dollar amount you choose so I always choose the maximum amount.

Turks an Caicos have a similar requirement. They have a list of 15 or so insurance companies on the approved list, which is posted on their tourism web site. I went with an annual plan with Allianz. Hoping not needing to use it…

I have travel international a lot and have been to several countries that require proof of insurance. I have Cigna Global and have not had any issues getting into any countries. It is by far the best insurance, up to $7.5million annual coverage, $0 out of pocket cost for literal any scenario you can think of including, international evacuations, surgery and all fees, specialist consults, hospital fees, nursing home, chemo/radiation, maternity, psychiatric, etc. etc. etc. the list goes for ever. Only thing I think that is not paid is full is glasses I think you only get like $300 and the rest is out of pocket and orthodontic treatments for dependents I think this is 50% coverage

We usually get the Allianz plans offered when we get our airline tickets for a trip out of the country. The text below is from a sheet that they emailed us for our trip to Cabo in a couple of weeks.

Our plans do not generally cover claims due to COVID-19. This is because our products do not generally cover losses caused directly or indirectly by known, foreseeable, or expected events, epidemics, or government prohibitions, warnings, or travel advisories. Nor do our products generally cover for fear of travel. However, for a temporary period in response to the ongoing public health and travel crisis, we are currently accommodating claims for:
  1. Under Emergency Medical Care Benefit: Emergency medical care for a customer who becomes ill with COVID-19 while on their trip.
  2. Under Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption Benefits: Trip cancellation and trip interruption if a customer becomes ill with COVID-19 either before or during their trip.
Customers who become ill with COVID-19 while on their trip will not be subject to the Trip Interruption benefit's five-day maximum limit for additional accommodation and transportation expenses (however, the maximum daily limit for such expenses and the maximum Trip Interruption benefit limit still apply).

Make sure to understand how travel insurance policies work and what is required for successful claims. Read the policy terms and conditions CAREFULLY. For most policies there is no special COVID coverage. COVID is covered like all other sickness or illness in the policy. Last year members of my family went on several trips, two internationally, I we purchased travel insurance so I did a lot of research.

The thing to understand is that travel insurance does not cover "fear" of getting sick. Testing positive for COVID is not the same as being sick and unable to travel. Generally, for a successful claim, a person has to be sick AND a physician and/or government authority has to state that the person is unfit to travel or has to undergo mandatory medical quarantine.

So if someone tests positive and just cancels their trip - no claim. If the government "recommends" not traveling because of COVID infection at the destination and the person cancels - no claim.

So if a person tests COVID positive at any point that would affect their trip, they have to go the extra step and obtain a note from a physician and/or government that states not just that they tested positive. It must state they are medically unfit for travel and/or required to go into medical quarantine. Obtaining the proper paperwork is the key to successful claims.

For example, on one trip the foreign government shut down a city airport because of COVID and airlines had to reroute all flights. We submitted the email from the airline of those facts and insurance reimbursed the additional cost.

The exception to the above is "cancel for any reason" and "interrupt for any reason" coverage. They don't literally reimburse for any and all reasons, but it's more coverage than sickness and illness.

My Allianz plan came with epidemic coverage endorsement. Unlike pure medical coverage plans, it includes trip interruption, re-booking, quarantine costs and trip cancellation coverage due to COVID.
at least that is what their “explanation of coverage “ document state.
