Good evening everyone. I really need help with my new MDX-D300 housing. Anyone with this housing who can you help me with any setup tips or any information about the setup and use of this housing? I have a Nikor 60 mm, and a Sigma 10-20mm Lens and ports. I live in the Sarasota Fl. area and would like to find someone in the central Fl. are to get with to learn how to use them. Thanks Dan

Dan,

Presumably you have a strobe/strobes as well. What brand and model?

Did you go for the Optical Dome Port or the Compact Dome Port?
I use the Compact Dome port with the Tokina 10-17, mainly because the Optical wasn't in stock and it's significantly cheaper. Results seem OK but I worry about scratching it.

I have found the AF-S Nikkor 60mm sometimes needs a little encouragement with autofocus so it is fairly important that you also have the focus ring. Once the subject is close to focus manually, I let the autofocus take over with no problem.
This only happens occasionally but can be quite annoying especially if you wanted quick focus.

I have the MDX-D300 with two S&S YS110alphas and found it all a little heavy underwater so
I have added a little bounancy to the strobe arms to bring the whole rig closer to neutral.

My best advice is to get in the water and use it as much as possible, you will soon learn what works best for you.

Cheers

Great video Mike!

Thanks everyone. We are working on more for the different types of video and still housings.

Mike good evening Dan Stanley here, I purchased my housing and ports from Dennis at your shop. I am purching as I get the monies. I didn't know about this video untill tonight. I had already muddled through setting up my housing and wish I had know about the video, it would have made the set up way less stressful. I emiled Dennis tonight asking about the Fx ext. ring you used on the video to attach the fisheye dome port. I purchased the DX macro port base, and the DX macro port 50 to use with my 60mm, and to possibly use with a 105mm in the future. Here is the question Do I have to have the FX EXT. ring to use the dome port. When I was setting this outfit up with Dennis we never discussed having to use the FX EXT ring with the dome port. I leave for Little Cayman in two weeks and need to figure out what all I need. I purchased to sets of the Sea and Sea sea arm VII 's. I have my TTl Converter III. and I am borrowiing a YS-110a strobe to use since I haven't been able to afford them. Looking at the sea arm VII's am I going to need another clamp to attach the strobe to the arms? Dennis usually gets back with me within a couple of days, hopefully you can clear things up for me. Please get back to me asap. Thanks Dan P.S. Mike Dennis contacted me today 7-25. He is sending the ext. ring Monday. He has been very helpful in the whole process of setting up my outfit. Looking forward to doing business in the future. Thanks for everything. Dan

Treb: I went with the optical dome. I am having to buy one piece at a time. On a limited budget. Working on the strobes. I believe I have one YS110 I am supposed to get from a guy next week. I will be looking for another as soon as I can afford it. This digital and housing thing is new to me.. Very overwhelming.. I cannot find anyone locally who uses the DMX housing.. I really want to take it on holiday in two weeks but don't know if I have everything I need to use it. Thanks for the the reply.. Dan

Dan,
Why did you get the TTL Converter III, did you get it second hand? The new version is the YS Converter/N.
I am not sure about the DX Macro port 50 and base. According to the Sea&Sea system chart this is for the 105mm macro, they indicate the NX macro port combination for the 60mm macro. This is the port combination I use. However, the DX Macro Port 50 without the base may work with the 60mm macro, you will need to check.

According to the system chart you will need the SX extension ring with the optical dome port for the Sigma 10-20mm.

Cheers
Treb
