Hello Scubaboarders,

We are heading down to the Yucatan peninsula July 22- Aug 6 2006. We are meeting up in Tulum to get some cenote dives done and will be staying in Isla Holbox at end of stay to try to snorkel with some whaliesharkies hopefully at Mawimbi Resort. In beteen, we are planning a 3-5 days in Cozumel to get some drift diving done. Unless instructed by SBers to do so, we were not planning on making reservations before arriving in Coz and were planning to shop around for both hotels and dive shops

Me: DM, 250+ dives, extra long bottom times. My new buddy: 40+ dives, Rescue, also not a big girl so hopefully good on air too (or I'll teach her :) ).

We are looking for cheap but safe/comfortable accommodations for 2 girls, and close to the docks to maximize dive time. From the posts it seems that Hotel Barracuda seems reasonable. Does anyone know of anything cheaper yet safe? I mean, from my point of view, a bed's a bed, as long as my dive gear and camera is safe and there are no bugs, it's good enough...

And does anyone feel strongly about making reservations?

Oh, and if anyone is in the same area at the same time, it would be fun to meet up as well...

Muchas gracias,

Nemertes

I would advise making reservations for the hotel at least; the hotels are pretty spread out, and shopping for a hotel on line is a lot easier than schlepping all your gear from hotel to hotel once you are there. Anyway, wouldn't you rather spend your time there relaxing and diving?

Most of the larger dive ops will probably have space for walk-in's that time of year, but the popular smaller ops (like Christi's) probably won't.

No bugs in the tropics!!! you must be kidding. Any way:

Barracuda is just remodeled and now has a pool and sea wall with a small man made cove every nice basic hotel walking distance to down town.

Hotel El Marques on calle 1 sur and 5th right off the Plaza is very basic but clean and the people who run it also run Coco's restaurant. No pool. $44 a night for 2.

Try Raul Platas of www.bottomtimedivers.net he has small fast boat dives computer and consumption, will keep your gear overnight rinse it and dry for next day. He is so accommodating that you will be happy with him. He is very safety conscious and goes slow underwater so you don't use air swimming. He will always find things that others swim right over. 80 min. or more common on his dives.

Cozumel is safe-- unless you make it obvious you have something of value and get drunk. Just like at home if you are flashy or can't control yourself you ask for it.
I've been going for 15 years and never had problems-- have a good time.

Ps My son and daughter were 19& 17 and had a great time by them selves a few years ago. It is very safe. Raul checked on them daily for me he is that kind of guy.
