I drove up to WBP today to get a dive in. I had prepared for a solo dive if no one showed up to dive with me. As luck would have it no one showed up. I waited until around 11:00am and suited up.

The park was empty but the office was staffed today, unusual. The weather was really nice. The sun was out in full force but the wind was whipping across the lake so I wasted no time getting into my undies.

I'm trying out a new Dive rite REC wing and one of my new 1ST stages that I purchased from 123Scuba.com on this tread. I'm using my Dacor Viper 2nd's with it. I know a lot of people don't like the Vipers and claim they suck, etc. I love mine. I've got them tuned perfect for the new 1st stages.

I get suited up and get into the water. The first thing I notice is that the water level is up a good bit from the New Year's day dive. Also the vis is really good. Probably the best I've seen it in over a year! I take my compass heading then submerge. I head East until I intercept the ski rope that leads to the bucket of rocks (35' today) at the North End and the fence platform at the South end. I follow it North to the bucket of rocks. I tie off my dive flag here then follow a East heading until I intercept the lines that lead to the deep platform and wood pile. I follow the line down to the jugs where it splits off. The line that splits to the left goes to the deep water platform and the line that splits to the right goes to the wood pile. I took the line to the right.

I followed the line down to 77' where the vis. started to drop into the 5 foot range and no light except for my UK D8 sunlight (which needs some newer batteries). Being that this was my 1st solo dive and I had never actually gone to the wood pile before, I decided to turn and head back. I took my time heading back and just looked around a little bit too. I finally made it back to the "end of the line". Here I had to head West to intercept the ski rope where the bucket of rocks are at and where I dropped off my flag. After a few minutes I came up to my flag. I took it and headed back up the line to the fence platform. When I got to 15' I took a 5min safety stop because it was so cold. At this depth it was 43F. That was the coldest stop I've ever did. After the stop I headed back to the exit point and walked back to the car. Packed it back up and headed home.

The dive was 44minutes
77' max. depth
EAN 36 mix
HP119 tank (short fill at 2800psi) ending at 1400psi.
Vis. 15'-20'
Surface Temp. 44F
Bottom Temp. 40F

I really enjoyed the dive. There was something serene about it. I felt completely relaxed and peaceful. I can only imagine how nice a solo dive on a reef with all the aquatic life must be.

Until next dive....

it was nice and worked out well. I have it bungied and then have the bungie secured to my backplate holes to keep it from taco-ing around the tank. I went from an Oxycheq singles wing to this. My plan is to use it with doubles and singles.

It did trap a little air and to vent it out I had to "wiggle" from side to side then vent again in a vertical position.

Bottom line is, I liked mine.

Jermy,
You should try the rec wing with out the bungie. I think you will find that it does not taco and the air does not get traped as bad. I use a rec wing with single tanks and never have a problem.

Awesome report JK. I'm very surprised how cold it was for your dive however, because I recorded about 52 F the week before. I guess the colder weather had a huge effect on the water temp in a short period of time.

Don't know about the temps and the colder weather. My Oceanic and my Timex Helox both showed the same temps. It was very cold. It was the coldest dive I've ever done (water temps), although I've dove at WBP when snow and sleet was blowing out on everything while I was doing a surface swim to descend. I was of course diving in a wetsuit then!
