Any Mariner outboard over 25 hp is simply a Mercury outboard with gray paint. A few of the smaller ones are either Yamahas, Nissans, or Tohatsu motors.

Mariner is also a Brunswick Company: http://www.mercurymarine.com/about/index.php

It's all about market share. More brands = more market share.

pre-1984 mariners are yamahas, they owned mariner up to that time. then the sold mariner and started "yamaha" in the USA market.

Well, sort of.
In 1972, Mercury (Brunswick) teamed 50-50 with Yamaha to create the Sanshin Kogyo Company which used Mercury blueprints to build outboard engines virtually identical to Mercury's engines. That partnership was broken up in 1984 by the FTC claiming it wasn't good for the consumer because it was strangling the other Japanese imports. So they were still Mercury designs going back to 1972.

mercury has never had yamaha under the hood except newer four stroke engines (smaller ones mainly)but now there tohatsu .....older mariners were still merc blocks

Back when I owned a Mariner Dealership all the little Mariners 2hp to 15 HP were made by Yamaha.

the 20 & 25 HP were Mercurys and the 30 HP & 40 HP was a Yamaha

the 45 HP was a Mercury and the 50 on up wre all made by Mercury.
