Hello. My name is Joshua Alexander. I was wondering if there are any Marine Biologists on the board. The reason I was wondering is because I am doing research project in English and was going to do it on becoming a marine biologist because that is what I am interested in becoming when I graduate. So if there are any out there please answer the following questions:
~About how much does it pay a month?
~How long do you have to go to school?
~Do you get to do a lot of diving?
~Where are some places to get a degree?
Plus I could use any other information you think I might be able to include. It would be nice to also get information from other countries as well. Oh yeah! Please include your name with your responce. :martian:

Pay... dunno... not working as a biologist.

Bachelors degree minimum... really should get a masters.

Diving... That depends a whole lot on who you are working for. There are a number of different agencies that employ marine biologists. From Sea World to your marine fisheries depts for state govt.

Texas A&M has a really good school in Galveston Tx. I would imagine both Florida and Florida State both have good schools too.

Best Wishes to you....

well im currently a junior at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (www.tamucc.edu), im studying to become a marine scientist (about the same thing)

Schools- Texas A&M- Galveston (www.tamu.tamug.edu or www.tamug.tamu.edu ?), Corpus Christi, college station: Univ of Texas Marine Science institute(in port aransas but you have to apply through austin); Univ of Alaska Anckorage; Woods Hole; Univ of Washington; Univ of miami; Florida State;australia has a few excellent ones, dont know about any other places but ill look, basically its pretty much any school along the coast.I wouldnt recomend any school that is not 15 min or less from a coast or a large body of salt water.

Degrees- PhD preffered, Masters is a must, although you can find good entry level jobs with a bachelors, but most recommend at least a masters degree. Also its a good idea to get bachelors from a different school and state than your masters and PhD.

Pay- well this varies from $20K :( a year to $100K+:D ,
it really depends on if you do research and teach at a Univ. or if you solely do research, and who you work for, Gov't, Univ, private, etc...

Diving- well it does depend on what you do, if you work for sea world most will be in tanks, if you work for a research facility then you will do alot, some with scuba some with submersibles. If you teach at a univ you will have to do research while youre there so the amount of diving will be limited.

most importantly dont go to a school based solely on its reputation, visit as many as possible, talk to students and profs and go to the one you feel most comfortable in, and one with the most opportunities to get experience as an undergrad, alot of schools dont give you much of a undergrad research experience, ive personnally had a chance to work with sea turtles, dolphins, and a variety of coastal sea birds and wildlfe, which made my choice to go to TAMU-CC worth passing up TAMU-G Good luck and PM me if you need any help finding info
