Mares abyss 1st and 2nd stage
Mares axis - octo

Dive no. 14 the octo had a small leak, dive 15 after 30 minutes at 26 feet wouldn't stop free flowing. dive 16 no way.

The primary has free flowed 3 times and I got it to stop, "by the book."

This set up has been used 12 times in 18 months and I'm not at all pleased with these issues. Going in for service tonight.

I've seen several Mares Axis octos come back in for premature service due to slow leaks. I've found that in every case to date that I've dealt with there wasn't anything wrong with the reg (i.e. seats were fine, the teflon crown didn't appear to have lost it's edge, etc.) or the reg set other than the fact that they seem to be tuned pretty aggresively by Mares. The simple solution, detune the critter a bit. The freeflowing primary could be caused by the same problem. There also is a possibility that your IP may be a bit high, but I'd bank my money on the tuning of the reg.

Either way, it's a good idea to have the set checked out.

Same problem was with SP s550 early series. I had to detune it a bit othervise it freefloved when I was swiming had down.

Typical Mares problem. My Axis did that all the time. Many Mares regs don't have adjustable 2nd stages - other than lever height. Detune the reg slightly and that should help.

Both my friend and I have had problems with free flows on our Axis octos. My understanding is that this is a common problem with the Axis. I have retired the Axis in favor of a Nikos (the model the Axis replaced) and have not had a problem since.

FWIW:

I have seen it many many times on the Axis as well. It's so bad, customers are throwing them back at the dive shop and wanting another brand altogether. I don't blame them.

Sure, detuning it works fine. My understanding of the problem is that the "new" Axis as opposed to the XTR for example, uses a different seat material, and doesn't stay exactly tuned to where the shop puts it, so after a few dives it starts to flow. The simple answer is to back off on the tuning.

Mares says they haven't had a problem...........sure, THEY breathe ScubaPro!!! their customers on the other hand, evidently DO have a problem.

Oh well, it's cheap junk, what do you want?

Yes I own 2 sets(Mares),....... no Axis's though :-) My 3 sets of ScubaPros always work well.

On a second stage axis. It just had to be slightly detuned.

Other than that had no problems what so ever. And the thing really breaths easy.

Ari :)
