I'm looking at an offer from a friend for a new mares rebel R2dfc. i have searched high and low for info on the "R2dfc" model and cant find anything. any info if this is a decent reg or not would be appreciated. below is the whole setup. the gauge will be changed out for a console with SPG, compass, and temp gauges, if not a console with a computer (nitrox). I am new to researching regs, and I would love to buy something nice, but I cant afford expensive right now so I am looking for inexpensive to get me through the beginning of the summer until work picks up and the money starts rolling in. I'm not a big fan of rental regs. Thanks!

Thanks!
Rob

The Mares Rebel R2 is an unbalanced piston first stage with a polymer bodied second stage. It is the lowest priced reg that Mares produces. For recreational dives made at depths less than 130' or so, and in water warmer than 50 degrees, it is perfectly fine. The design is very simple to service, and offers outstanding reliability. It is very similar in design to the other manufacturer's unbalanced piston regs.

Dive buddies and I used R2 regs on stage and deco bottles for a number of years. I ended up switching over to Mares MR12 first stages due to being able to use the same first stage on all of my technical diving regs.

As the tank pressure drops, the reg will become slightly harder to inhale from. The reg needs to be adjusted with a cylinder pressure at the maximum that you intend to use. The intermediate pressure drops slowly as the cylinder pressre decreases. This means that there is less incoming pressure to the second stage, and this decrease in pressure doesn't provide as much pneumatic "assistance" with the cracking effort. For example, if the IP is set at 150psi at 3,000psi cylinder pressure, then the IP is probably going to be around 138 at 300psi.

Thanks for the info Greg.

I currently use the Rebel 2nd stage as the octopus on my MR12 Proton and MR22 Abyss setups, and thought the Rebel R2 might work well as a simple and economical regulator for a slung deco or pony bottle. Good to know someone with a lot more experience than I have has tried this setup!
