Both are cold water regs, which is the best breather, which has best results in cold ,deep water?
does anybody know?

I would say the Scubapro, great reg and great warrenty, also depending on where you live mares is not always servicable in certain parts of the country and other places. I know where i live if you want are need work done on a mares you need to send it off which is no fun, you can get a scubapro fixed just about anywhere in the world

I would be very surprised if there were not a Mares dealer in most diving locales. Mares is one of the most widely available brands on the market, along with ScubaPro.

MK17 gets my vote. Best breather is more determined by your 2nd stage as well.

I use the Mares Proton Ice Extreme with my recreational setup (single tank). Bottom temp of my dive last Sunday? 34 degrees at 96 feet (and that is not in Celcius). Very smooth breathing at depth, and very easy to service/maintain.

They also come with a lifetime replacement on the annual service kit - so no cost (other than labour) for an annual inspection/overhaul. I even use the Mares Proton metals on my stage bottles - very reliable and smooth breathing regulator - definitely designed not to freeze up.

As to the stories about it being difficult to get them serviced...unless you are truly in bum-******-nowhere, I can't imagine much trouble. Hope this helped.

Cheers!

I just got a couple of the Proton Extreme's in the shop and I am taking one ice diving Feb 3. Can't wait!
As for them getting serviced you can not throw a rock that wouldn't hit a dive shop in the DFW Metroplex that would work on them. Scubapro dealers are not as prevalent in this area as Mares dealers are. Where are you located?

I would go with a MK17 or to learn more use search for mk17 I had started a thread about that.
Wish this helps ;)
